How to Write the “Why Computer Science?” Essay

What’s covered:, what is the purpose of the “why computer science” essay, elements of a good computer science essay, computer science essay example, where to get your essay edited.

You will encounter many essay prompts as you start applying to schools, but if you are intent on majoring in computer science or a related field, you will come across the “ Why Computer Science? ” essay archetype. It’s important that you know the importance behind this prompt and what constitutes a good response in order to make your essay stand out.

For more information on writing essays, check out CollegeVine’s extensive essay guides that include everything from general tips, to essay examples, to essay breakdowns that will help you write the essays for over 100 schools.

Colleges ask you to write a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay so you may communicate your passion for computer science, and demonstrate how it aligns with your personal and professional goals. Admissions committees want to see that you have a deep interest and commitment to the field, and that you have a vision for how a degree in computer science will propel your future aspirations.

The essay provides an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other applicants. It’s your chance to showcase your understanding of the discipline, your experiences that sparked or deepened your interest in the field, and your ambitions for future study and career. You can detail how a computer science degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to make a meaningful contribution in this rapidly evolving field.

A well-crafted “ Why Computer Science? ” essay not only convinces the admissions committee of your enthusiasm and commitment to computer science, but also provides a glimpse of your ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively—essential skills for a  computer scientist.

The essay also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the specific computer science program at the college or university you are applying to. You can discuss how the program’s resources, faculty, curriculum, and culture align with your academic interests and career goals. A strong “ Why Computer Science? ” essay shows that you have done your research, and that you are applying to the program not just because you want to study computer science, but because you believe that this particular program is the best fit for you.

Writing an effective “ Why Computer Science ?” essay often requires a blend of two popular college essay archetypes: “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? “.

Explain “Why This Major?”

The “ Why This Major? ” essay is an opportunity for you to dig deep into your motivations and passions for studying Computer Science. It’s about sharing your ‘origin story’ of how your interest in Computer Science took root and blossomed. This part of your essay could recount an early experience with coding, a compelling Computer Science class you took, or a personal project that sparked your fascination.

What was the journey that led you to this major? Was it a particular incident, or did your interest evolve over time? Did you participate in related activities, like coding clubs, online courses, hackathons, or internships?

Importantly, this essay should also shed light on your future aspirations. How does your interest in Computer Science connect to your career goals? What kind of problems do you hope to solve with your degree?

The key for a strong “ Why This Major? ” essay is to make the reader understand your connection to the subject. This is done through explaining your fascination and love for computer science. What emotions do you feel when you are coding? How does it make you feel when you figure out the solution after hours of trying? What aspects of your personality shine when you are coding?

By addressing these questions, you can effectively demonstrate a deep, personal, and genuine connection with the major.

Emphasize “Why This College?”

The “ Why This College? ” component of the essay demonstrates your understanding of the specific university and its Computer Science program. This is where you show that you’ve done your homework about the college, and you know what resources it has to support your academic journey.

What unique opportunities does the university offer for Computer Science students? Are there particular courses, professors, research opportunities, or clubs that align with your interests? Perhaps there’s a study abroad program or an industry partnership that could give you a unique learning experience. Maybe the university has a particular teaching methodology that resonates with you.

Also, think about the larger university community. What aspects of the campus culture, community, location, or extracurricular opportunities enhance your interest in this college? Remember, this is not about general praises but about specific features that align with your goals. How will these resources and opportunities help you explore your interests further and achieve your career goals? How does the university’s vision and mission resonate with your own values and career aspirations?

It’s important when discussing the school’s resources that you always draw a connection between the opportunity and yourself. For example, don’t tell us you want to work with X professor because of their work pioneering regenerative AI. Go a step further and say because of your goal to develop AI surgeons for remote communities, learning how to strengthen AI feedback loops from X professor would bring you one step closer to achieving your dream.

By articulating your thoughts on these aspects, you demonstrate a strong alignment between the college and your academic goals, enhancing your appeal as a prospective student.

Demonstrate a Deep Understanding of Computer Science

As with a traditional “ Why This Major? ” essay, you must exhibit a deep and clear understanding of computer science. Discuss specific areas within the field that pique your interest and why. This could range from artificial intelligence to software development, or from data science to cybersecurity.

What’s important is to not just boast and say “ I have a strong grasp on cybersecurity ”, but instead use your knowledge to show your readers your passion: “ After being bombarded with cyber attack after cyber attack, I explained to my grandparents the concept of end-to-end encryption and how phishing was not the same as a peaceful afternoon on a lake. ”

Make it Fun!

Students make the mistake of thinking their college essays have to be serious and hyper-professional. While you don’t want to be throwing around slang and want to present yourself in a positive light, you shouldn’t feel like you’re not allowed to have fun with your essay. Let your personality shine and crack a few jokes.

You can, and should, also get creative with your essay. A great way to do this in a computer science essay is to incorporate lines of code or write the essay like you are writing out code.

Now we will go over a real “ Why Computer Science? ” essay a student submitted and explore what the essay did well, and where there is room for improvement.

Please note: Looking at examples of real essays students have submitted to colleges can be very beneficial to get inspiration for your essays. You should never copy or plagiarize from these examples when writing your own essays. Colleges can tell when an essay isn’t genuine and will not view students favorably if they plagiarized.

I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. Although my Fat Cat project seems simple now, it was the beginning of an enthusiastic passion for computer science. Four years and thousands of hours of programming later, that passion has grown into an intense desire to explore how computer science can serve society. Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads, I’m reminded of Uncle Ben’s advice to a young Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility”. Likewise, the need to ensure digital equality has skyrocketed with AI’s far-reaching presence in society; and I believe that digital fairness starts with equality in education.

The unique use of threads at the College of Computing perfectly matches my interests in AI and its potential use in education; the path of combined threads on Intelligence and People gives me the rare opportunity to delve deep into both areas. I’m particularly intrigued by the rich sets of both knowledge-based and data-driven intelligence courses, as I believe AI should not only show correlation of events, but also provide insight for why they occur.

In my four years as an enthusiastic online English tutor, I’ve worked hard to help students overcome both financial and technological obstacles in hopes of bringing quality education to people from diverse backgrounds. For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. I’d love to explore how to integrate AI technology into the teaching process to make education more available, affordable, and effective for people everywhere. And with the innumerable opportunities that Georgia Tech has to offer, I know that I will be able to go further here than anywhere else.

What the Essay Did Well

This essay perfectly accomplishes the two key parts of a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay: answering “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? ”. Not to mention, we get a lot of insight into this student and what they care about beyond computer science, and a fun hook at the beginning.

Starting with the “ Why This Major? ” aspect of the response, this essay demonstrates what got the student into computer science, why they are passionate about the subject, and what their goals are. They show us their introduction to the world of CS with an engaging hook: “I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. ” We then see this is a core passion because they spent “ Four years and thousands of hours ,” coding.

The student shows us why they care about AI with the sentence, “ Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads ,” which makes the topic personal by demonstrating their fear at AI’s capabilities. But, rather than let panic overwhelm them, the student calls upon Spiderman and tells us their goal of establishing digital equality through education. This provides a great basis for the rest of the essay, as it thoroughly explains the students motivations and goals, and demonstrates their appreciation for interdisciplinary topics.

Then, the essay shifts into answering “ Why This College? ”, which it does very well by honing in on a unique facet of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing: threads. This is a great example of how to provide depth to the school resources you mention. The student describes the two threads and not only why the combination is important to them, but how their previous experiences (i.e. online English tutor) correlate to the values of the thread: “ For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. ”

What Could Be Improved

This essay does a good job covering the basics of the prompt, but it could be elevated with more nuance and detail. The biggest thing missing from this essay is a strong core to tie everything together. What do we mean by that? We want to see a common theme, anecdote, or motivation that is weaved throughout the entire essay to connect everything. Take the Spiderman quote for example. If this was expanded, it could have been the perfect core for this essay.

Underlying this student’s interest in AI is a passion for social justice, so they could have used the quote about power and responsibility to talk about existing injustices with AI and how once they have the power to create AI they will act responsibly and help affected communities. They are clearly passionate about equality of education, but there is a disconnect between education and AI that comes from a lack of detail. To strengthen the core of the essay, this student needs to include real-world examples of how AI is fostering inequities in education. This takes their essay from theoretical to practical.

Essays About Computers: Top 5 Examples Plus Prompts

Computers are helpful technology that many of us use on a daily basis; if you are writing essays about computers, use our essay examples and prompts below.

We often recognize computers as the devices we use to browse the internet, communicate with others, and type down notes, but there is more to a computer than this. A complex set of processes, calculations, and operations performs everything we do on a computer. Without a doubt, computers make our lives easier and enhance our personal and working life.

5 Top Essay Examples

1. types of computers by brent dawson, 2. uses of computers in education by kristina barroso, 3. our dependency on computers by nora fox, 4. neural networks: is your brain like a computer by shamli prakash.

  • 5. The Human Brain vs. Supercomputers… Which One Wins? By John Staughton

1. The Many Uses of Computers

2. can computers take over society, 3. is computer science a worthwhile program to study, 4. pros and cons of computers, 5. can computers compete with the human brain.

“Calculations for things such as automotive design, weather forecasting, and aerospace use supercomputers. Embedded computers are used for functions in a larger product. They are located in things such as automobiles, consumer electronics and office machines. As we all know computers come in many shapes and sizes. They can be used for many different things and can be located anywhere. Technology has increased so much that the most unheard compact thing can be a computer.

Dawson stresses that computers can come in all shapes and sizes. There are different types of computers, such as personal computers, mobile computers, game consoles, and supercomputers, each with its own functions and specialties. He briefly touches on each type of computer and its uses. Technology has come a long way, as the most complex computers are everywhere, whether in laboratories, offices, or even our mobile phones or watches.

“Critics argue that spell check and other computer features that automatically correct errors in spelling and punctuation make students too lazy to learn and apply the rules themselves. These features, however, help point out where students went wrong and offer valuable learning opportunities that can help students enhance their understanding of appropriate spelling and punctuation.”

In her essay, Barroso discusses the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating computers into education. They allow schools to maximize online resources, foster student engagement, and make it easier for teachers and students to perform school-related tasks. However, they may make students lazy to check mistakes, thinking that the computers will automatically check them. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons.

“As far as I concerned, computer is a great invention and it is useful to human life. It should be impossible to live without computer as we get too much used of computers nowadays. However, we should use it wisely. We know the fact that the more we rely on computer, the more we will lose in our life. So, we should also find ways to make our dependence on computers less dangerous to us, so that we will not rely on computer completely.”

Fox discusses the state of society today where we rely far too much on computers. They help us greatly in our daily lives, but they have made us depend on technology for information rather than thinking for ourselves. And if something goes wrong, like the servers crash, the world is at a standstill. Computers are a net good for society, but we must avoid revolving our lives around technology.

“In data science terms, this phase is somewhat akin to ‘Model Training’ — the more things a child is exposed to the more the synapses associated with it get built. A good example is language — the more a child is exposed to linguistics in early years, the more evolved the area of her brain that is associated with languages would get. Ditto for other cognitive and non-cognitive abilities.”

Prakash discusses the different ways in which our brains operate as computers. An information processing system has five components: input, output, storage, processing, and program. The human brain does have all of these components, which are used to perform our daily functions. She looks into how human intelligence can be “trained,” like computers are developed.

5. The Human Brain vs. Supercomputers… Which One Wins? By John Staughton

“When the brain identifies a more efficient or effective way to compute and function, it can morph and alter its physical and neuronal structure, hence the term “plasticity“. Until we achieve true Artificial Intelligence (in which computers should theoretically be able to re-wire themselves), neuroplasticity will always keep the human brain at least one step ahead of “static” supercomputers.”

Staughton writes about how much more advanced computers have become in recent decades, with some of them being able to outsmart humans in tasks such as chess. However, he explains that our brains are very different from technology and are inherently superior to even the most powerful computers in terms of efficiency, adaptability, and many other factors. However, he keeps the door on computers, eventually developing beyond our capabilities in the future.

Invention of the PC

By: History.com Editors

Updated: March 28, 2023 | Original: May 11, 2011

black pc keyboard, keyboard is very useful tool for personal computer, it is necessary to write words

Today’s personal computers are drastically different from the massive, hulking machines that emerged out of World War II—and the difference isn’t only in their size. By the 1970s, technology had evolved to the point that individuals—mostly hobbyists and electronics buffs—could purchase unassembled PCs or “microcomputers” and program them for fun, but these early PCs could not perform many of the useful tasks that today’s computers can. Users could do mathematical calculations and play simple games, but most of the machines’ appeal lay in their novelty. Today, hundreds of companies sell personal computers, accessories and sophisticated software and games, and PCs are used for a wide range of functions from basic word processing to editing photos to managing budgets. At home and at work, we use our PCs to do almost everything. It is nearly impossible to imagine modern life without them.

Invention of the PC: The Computer Age

The earliest electronic computers were not “personal” in any way: They were enormous and hugely expensive, and they required a team of engineers and other specialists to keep them running. One of the first and most famous of these, the Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer (ENIAC), was built at the University of Pennsylvania to do ballistics calculations for the U.S. military during World War II . ENIAC cost $500,000, weighed 30 tons and took up nearly 2,000 square feet of floor space. On the outside, ENIAC was covered in a tangle of cables, hundreds of blinking lights and nearly 6,000 mechanical switches that its operators used to tell it what to do. On the inside, almost 18,000 vacuum tubes carried electrical signals from one part of the machine to another.

Did you know? Time magazine named the personal computer its 1982 "Man of the Year."

Invention of the PC: Postwar Innovations

ENIAC and other early computers proved to many universities and corporations that the machines were worth the tremendous investment of money, space and manpower they demanded. (For example, ENIAC could solve in 30 seconds a missile-trajectory problem that could take a team of human “computers” 12 hours to complete.) At the same time, new technologies were making it possible to build computers that were smaller and more streamlined. In 1948, Bell Labs introduced the transistor, an electronic device that carried and amplified electrical current but was much smaller than the cumbersome vacuum tube. Ten years later, scientists at Texas Instruments and Fairchild Semiconductor came up with the integrated circuit, an invention that incorporated all of the computer’s electrical parts–transistors, capacitors, resistors and diodes–into a single silicon chip.

But one of the most significant inventions that paved the way for the PC revolution was the microprocessor. Before microprocessors were invented, computers needed a separate integrated-circuit chip for each one of their functions. (This was one reason the machines were still so large.) Microprocessors were the size of a thumbnail, and they could do things the integrated-circuit chips could not: They could run the computer’s programs, remember information and manage data all by themselves.

The first microprocessor on the market was developed in 1971 by an engineer at Intel named Ted Hoff. (Intel was located in California’s Santa Clara Valley, a place nicknamed “Silicon Valley” because of all the high-tech companies clustered around the Stanford Industrial Park there.) Intel’s first microprocessor, a 1/16-by-1/8-inch chip called the 4004, had the same computing power as the massive ENIAC.

The Invention of the PC

These innovations made it cheaper and easier to manufacture computers than ever before. As a result, the small, relatively inexpensive “microcomputer”–soon known as the “personal computer”–was born. In 1974, for instance, a company called Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) introduced a mail-order build-it-yourself computer kit called the Altair. Compared to earlier microcomputers, the Altair was a huge success: Thousands of people bought the $400 kit. However, it really did not do much. It had no keyboard and no screen, and its output was just a bank of flashing lights. Users input data by flipping toggle switches.

In 1975, MITS hired a pair of Harvard students named Paul G. Allen and Bill Gates to adapt the BASIC programming language for the Altair. The software made the computer easier to use, and it was a hit. In April 1975 the two young programmers took the money they made from “Altair BASIC” and formed a company of their own—Microsoft—that soon became an empire.

The year after Gates and Allen started Microsoft, two engineers in the Homebrew Computer Club in Silicon Valley named Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak built a homemade computer that would likewise change the world. This computer, called the Apple I, was more sophisticated than the Altair: It had more memory, a cheaper microprocessor and a monitor with a screen. In April 1977, Jobs and Wozniak introduced the Apple II, which had a keyboard and a color screen. Also, users could store their data on an external cassette tape. (Apple soon swapped those tapes for floppy disks.) To make the Apple II as useful as possible, the company encouraged programmers to create “applications” for it. For example, a spreadsheet program called VisiCalc made Apple a practical tool for all kinds of people (and businesses)–not just hobbyists.

The PC Revolution

The PC revolution had begun. Soon companies like Xerox, Tandy, Commodore and IBM entered the market, and computers became ubiquitous in offices and eventually homes. Innovations like the “Graphical User Interface,” which allows users to select icons on the computer screen instead of writing complicated commands, and the computer mouse made PCs even more convenient and user-friendly. Today, laptops, smartphones and tablet computers allow us to have a PC with us wherever we go.

How to Build a Computer? Essay

Introduction.

Despite having been in the market for more than four decades, brand computers remain as expensive as they were during the last decade. Besides, they sometimes lack the specific specs that a customer is interested in. Thus, it is necessary to acquire explicit knowledge on how to build and customized a personal computer that is relatively affordable. This reflective treatise attempts to prove that it is really not hard to build your own cheaper computer, than taking it somewhere to have it done, by following these simple steps.

Building a personal computer

Preparation and materials.

In order to build a personal computer, it is necessary to choose the performance that you want by considering the aspects such as the desired processor speed, the memory, and storage capacity. This will ensure that you buy materials that will give you the desired performance level. This step is followed by getting the hardwares and tools for the actual construction process.

The hardwares for a typical computer include the processor, motherboard, RAM (Random Access Memory), hard drive, video card, case, power supply, keyboard, and a mouse. It is important to carry out research on each hardware component before making a purchase. Fortunately, magazines such as Maximum PC, Custom PC, and PC World may give you an insight on the hardwares. The tools you may use include a set of screw drivers and screw holder.

Step by Step Instruction

Step 1: verification.

The first step involves opening the cases to verify if all the components are in good state. It is necessary to observe personal safety by wearing a protective glove when opening the case.

Step 2: Power supply installation

Install the power supply by putting the motherboard into the case. Place the data and power lines in the backboard of the case. It is important to ensure that the power supply is properly attached to the motherboard. In addition, ensure that the power supply is stable enough to handle any power need in the computer. After installing the power supply, you should ground yourself to avoid power shock from the electrostatic discharge.

Step 3: Motherboard installation

Start this stage by unpacking the motherboard from its storage container. Place the motherboard on the work station table. However, be considerate of the fact that the motherboard is highly conductive and should not be placed on a surface with electric currents. You may wish to add any special elements in the motherboard to suit your needs.

The components that may be added include the power regulator, double switch, and extra cables. Upon affixing the additional components on to the motherboard, properly install it in the case of the computer.

Proceed to install the processor by mounting it accurately onto the motherboard via the plug spaces. There is always an arrow at the base of the processor to guide the pairing process. To make the process of inserting the processor into the motherboard easier, you may need to carefully undo the socket for the CPU. It is important to note that the pairing process is smooth and should not depend on any force. Should you notice that it cannot slip right in, you should probably try to realign the pairing.

After successfully pairing the pins, proceed to tighten the CPU socket through properly securing it on the arm that supports the case. You should then close the CPU socket and secure it on the support arm. Apply the thermal paste gently all over the surface of the mounted processor. Excessive paste might result in very slow heat transfer and may make the CPU cooling process ineffective. Depending on the type of the processor, it might be necessary to affix the heat sink in the stock cooler.

The next step involves installation of the RAM. Start by unfastening the latches and driving the RAM gently into the case until the holes in the handle matches the holes on the case. Each of the holes is keyed to fit in any case without any difficulty. After this, remove the backplate gently from the computer case by applying a consistent thrush, especially for the case that is not screwed.

You may remove any unnecessary covering on the plate before returning it in its position. This stage is completed by securing the motherboard. The motherboard is locked by pushing it gently upwards against the backplate. Each back port on the motherboard should be fitted into the ports on the backplate to confirm that is well positioned.

Step 4: Installing extra cards and drives

In order to install graphic cards, start by removing the covers on the back panel around the PCI slot. The graphic cards may then be inserted through the cover opening. This might require slight bending of the card to fit into position. You may repeat the procedure for other PCI cards as need may require.

In order to add any relevant drive, you should open the panel cover on the front of the case, on the upper chamber. You may then insert the drive while making sure that the case and the drive are in an upward position. You should secure the drives, when they do not fit perfectly in the panel, by fastening with screws on the left and rights sides. The same procedure can be repeated for the hard disk while making sure that it is inserted in the right opening marked as ‘hard disk’.

After inserting the hard drives and the hard disk, do not forget to attach the SATA cables that connect them to the motherboard. Ensure that each cable is inserted in the right port. Each port is appropriately marked besides having different pairing holes. Interestingly, the SATA cables may be inserted in either direction since both ends have similar connector.

Step 5: The finished product

Start by connecting the power supply directly to the port on the motherboard and the video card. You may proceed by connecting the power supply further to the different drives while adjusting the wire placement to ensure good airflow. Finally, you should install the air fan on to the motherboard and optimize its performance by following the arrow indicating the direction of rotation. Close the case and plug in the computer onto a monitor. You can then power the computer and install your preferred operating system.

Making a person computer involves five steps. The first step is verification followed by installing the power supply. The third step involves motherboard installation after which extra cards and other drives are mounted to complete the assembly. Apparently, it is really not that hard to build your own cheaper computer, than taking it somewhere to have it done, by following the above simple steps.

I am looking forward to taking classes from renowned professors and working with other talented students. I believe that your program will provide me with the skills and knowledge that I need to become a successful computer scientist.”

“Computers have always been a part of my life. As a toddler, I would watch my father work on computer programs for his business. Fascinated by the blinking cursor on the screen, I would ask him what he was doing and how it worked. My parents bought me my first computer when I was in grade school and I taught myself how to program in BASIC.

Since then, computer science has been my passion. I have pursued every opportunity to learn more about it, including taking computer science courses in high school and college and working as a research assistant for a computer science professor. I am excited to continue learning about computer science at the graduate level and to pursue a career in this field.

One of my biggest accomplishments in the field of computer science so far has been developing a computer program that can generate 3D models of human faces. This program has the potential to be used in a variety of applications, such as video game development, computer-aided design, and even law enforcement. I am currently working on submitting this program to a computer science conference for publication.

I have also been involved in a number of extracurricular activities related to computer science. I am a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. I have also volunteered my time to teach computer science to elementary and middle school students through a local program called Girls Who Code.

Besides this, I have worked on several personal coding projects of my own. For example, I created a computer program that can solve Sudoku puzzles by using a technique called constraint satisfaction. I also developed a website for a local business called Joe’s pizzeria. My skills in computer science have also helped me in my other hobbies, such as photography and video editing. For the latter, I made a light correction tool that can automatically color-correct a video based on the primer of a still image.

I believe that my passion for computer science, as well as my experience in the field, makes me an ideal candidate for a graduate program in computer science. I am excited to continue learning and expanding my skills in computer science so that I can make an impact in this field. For this reason, I am excited to submit an early decision application to your computer science graduate program.”

After you have completed the first draft of your computer science personal statement, you should follow these steps to edit, polish, and finalize your computer science personal statement:

1. Check the word count : Most programs will give you a word or a page limit for your computer science personal statement. Make sure you stay within that limit, as going over it can make you seem like you can’t follow instructions.

2. Proofread and edit it : This step is crucial. A well-written and error-free computer science personal statement will make you look more professional and competent. Use spell check and grammar check , and then have someone else proofread it for you.

3. Ask for feedback : Once you’ve proofread and edited your computer science personal statement, ask a few people for their feedback. Choose people whose opinions you trust and who will be honest with you.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed : After you’ve received feedback, make the necessary changes to your computer science personal statement. Then, proofread and edit it again. Repeat this cycle until you’re happy with your statement.

5. Modify personal statement for each program : Don’t just submit the same computer science personal statement to every program you apply to. Tailor it to each individual program, highlighting why you’re a good fit for that specific school.

6. Submit : Once you’re happy with your computer science personal statement, submit it along with the rest of your application.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to do all of the steps above so that you can submit a strong statement. Remember, this is just one part of your overall application package, so make sure all other elements are strong as well—such as your grades, letters of recommendation , and resume.

We hope that this guide has been helpful and that you feel more confident in your ability to write a stellar computer science personal statement. Remember, the most important thing is to be yourself and let your passion for computer science shine through. Personal computer (PC) as we know it today has undergone several transitions and phases in its life time. In this process, several companies have entered, conquered, lost and left the industry, while several others adapted to the changing rules of the industry and continue till date to function in the PC market. Apple is one such company. In fact, Apple was the pioneering company which introduced the concept of Personal Computer to the consumers in the first place in the year 1978. The success of this product, called as Apple II was so immense that Apple sold 100,000 Apple IIs in just a span of two years (Yoffie & Rosano, 2012, 1-2).

However, in the year 1981, when IBM entered the market of PCs, the dominant position of Apple was highly challenged. The main reason was that the Operating System (OS) DOS by Microsoft which was used by IBM was much more open and even the microprocessors (by Intel) used were faster compared to those by Apple. Secondly, several other manufacturers were able to clone the Microsoft's operating system, thereby providing more options for the consumers to buy. This was where Apple faced its first setback -- relying more on complete integration -- horizontal and vertical -- Apple stuck to developing its own designs and software, while refusing license to other interested parties. Lacking in a faster OS, its sales suffered immensely, even as its premium pricing policy further demeaned its customers.

It is not to say, however, that Apple did not respond to the easy-to-use OS. In 1984, Apple launched Macintosh, which had a new improved OS which was more user-friendly. Nevertheless, the problem with the slow microprocessor still prevailed and hence, Apple saw a decline of its profits by 62% in merely three years time. This was when in a coup, Steve Jobs was ousted from the board membership, while John Scully was given the helm of Apple Computers. The first five years of the Scully regime were good as Apple innovated into bringing "plug and play" options for the PC users. However, with the IBM-compatibles launching Windows 3, this gap was minimised. Nevertheless, Apple continued its reign over the PC market. It was when the price of PCs by IBM reduced drastically, that the offering by Apple seemed hugely overpriced in comparison. Scully tried to fill in this gap as well by launching Mac Classic priced $999, while also collaborating with IBM into developing new OS. Nevertheless, both these steps failed immensely as more focussed and lower budgeted options in PCs were available for the PC users. The problem arose more so because of the open system of the Microsoft's OS platform where integration was easier to reach with other products and offerings. Further, Apple's failure to launch a better, upgraded OS led to a fall in its world-wide market share to a mere 3% in 1997.

It was only after Steve Jobs resumed his position in Apple in 1997 that consolidation of Apple's offerings was reached and focus began on developing better software and products for the consumers. It was realised that as much as Apple's R&D (Research & Development) was to be blamed, the marketing processes of Apple's too were responsible for its bleak performance. There was no option of direct sales, either through website or through Apple retail showrooms. Steve Jobs, on his return, identified these key areas and worked on the same, only to earn back all the losses made in the year 1997, while making a whopping profit of $309 million in 1998. It was truly a story of struggle and conquer for Apple in the PC industry.

Before the invention of personal computers, computers were simply big machines that operated using a wide range of transistors. Only specialized persons were allowed to operate them, and they were commonly identified as computer priesthood. During that period, computers were difficult and expensive to use. Only few persons encountered them, even programmers did not touch them. However, with the invention of personal computers, things changed. Individuals and companies were allowed to have access and sell personal computers, complex software, accessories, games, and PCs for use in various functions (O’Regan, 2016). While at work or at home, individuals use personal computers to handle tasks. People can hardly imagine the world without them. In the following discussion, the focus is on an invention associated with computers, specifically the personal computers.

The question most people ask is, just how did the PCs come to be? Well, as mentioned before, the early computers were simply big, weighing as much as 30 tons, and could occupy a space of 2000 square feet on the floor (Rankin, 2018). It consisted massive cabling, and the switches were just so many. However, technicians continued to pursue technology that would make things easy, one that would allow building up a more streamlined and smaller computer. In 80s, Bell Labs discovered the transistors. It was an electronic gadget, capable of carrying and amplifying electrical current, and was much smaller compared to vacuum tube. A decade later, experts at Texas Instruments and Fairchild Semiconductor introduced an integrated circuit (Rankin, 2018). The invention had the ability to integrate all the capacitors, transistors, diodes, and resistors into one silicon chip.

Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.

However, even with the emergence of an integrated circuit, scientists did not get satisfied. A new invention that opened way for personal computers was invented. It was the microprocessor. Prior to the coming of microprocessors, computers used integrated-circuit chip to perform each of its functions (Rankin, 2018). Probably the reason the computers still looked big. Microprocessors were resembled a thumbnail in terms of size, and they performed better than the integrated-circuit chips. They were capable of running computer programs, managing data and could remember information by themselves. In 1971, Ted Hoff made the first microprocessor. It was 1/16-1/8-inch chip known as 4004, with computing power equivalent to the ENIAC computer (Rankin, 2018).

In view of the foregoing inventions, it was easier and less expensive to manufacture personal computers. It led to emergence of a relatively small and inexpensive microcomputer referred to as the personal computer. For instance, in 1974, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) came up with a computer referred to as the Altar (Rankin, 2018). While compared with the microcomputers, the Altar was simply big success. Most individuals purchased them, although it lacked a screen and keyboard. Later, MITS sought the services of Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen to install BASIC programming language to the Altair. The computer became easier to use. The two engineers would later form partnership and start Microsoft (O’Regan, 2016).

Following the emergence of Microsoft, two engineers formed yet another partnership and came up with a homemade computer that became a hit across the globe. The two were Stephen Wozniak and Ste Jobs. They named the computer Apple I, and was more advanced than the Altair. Apple I had an improved version microprocessor, the memory was advanced, had a screen and a monitor (O’Regan, 2016). Soon after its introduction, the two engineers came up with Apple II, complete with a colored screen and a keyboard. The gadget enabled the users to store data in external gadgets, the floppy disks. Programmers were brought on board to create applications of Apple II. They came up with VisiCalc that improved the Apple to a gadget that would be used by all manner of people, businesses included. This discovery opened up the PC revolution. Numerous companies such as Commodore, IBM, Tandy, and Xerox joined the market and more computers were manufactured (O’Regan, 2016). They became prevalent in offices and homes. The new personal computers had graphical user interface that allowed easy selection of icons as opposed to writing complex commands. The introduction of mouse made personal computers user-friendly and convenient. The discovery continues to thrive today, and tablet computers, Smartphone, and laptops have made it easier to walk around with computers.

Impact of Personal Computers

The introduction of personal computers made huge impact in the society. Companies found a low-cost method of transforming themselves by distributing data and processing capabilities to individuals and departments in many locations. From a personal level, computers have affected the way individuals make purchases and shop. Consequently, the introduction of online platforms such as Amazon has enabled people to use their computers at the comfort of their homes to make purchases. In terms of communication, personal computers have contributed greatly, as people can use emails, and social media platforms to communicate. It is easier to meet new people, and online communication has become the preferred mode, compared to making phone calls (Keranen, 2016). With the discovery of personal computers, companies can have employees working at home or even work from the corporate headquarters. They have enabled use of telecommuters, which are used to communicate to the employees to send their work via the Internet.

Personal computer essay

Personal Computers can help individuals solve a variety of problems. Computer applications enable an individual to manage information effectively, provided the user has basic knowledge of computers. A basic training in computers would mean – knowing the parts of the computer, writing drafts and final products with a word processor, searching for information using a CD-ROM database A basic level of knowledge of computers can help a great deal. Work that would otherwise need to be done manually can be done using spreadsheets. This includes day to day accounting work like keeping track of expenses and bills.

Computer applications not only make it easier but also allow comparative analysis and support various other features that would be quite difficult and sometimes even impossible to be done manually. One advantage of using computer applications is that a copy is always saved in the computer. The search facility of a computer allows easy to old files and documents. A search through a file of hard copies can take many times more time that an electronic search. Word processing applications make letter writing very simple. One can save sample letters and drafts.

It becomes easy to open an existing document and make a few changes here and there than to rewrite another. With a basic training in database management systems a PC user can start building simple database applications and using them. There are various software programs that can be used for training purposes. A personal computer allows access to emailing and internet which is one of the most effective means of communication and access to any information.
