From dawn until dusk, many of us sneak moments here and there checking our socials. Refreshing our feeds on social media platforms may be the first thing we do in the morning and the last thing we do at night. And it all adds up: On average, according to data from Statista , most people in the United States spend over two hours a day scrolling, liking and perusing. Those two (or more) hours open all of us up to a lot of fun content, sure, but they also expose us to out-of-control amounts of viral headlines, “fake news” and other questionable content that can be surprisingly — and dangerously — influential.
The growing prevalence of fake news on various social media platforms is no secret — nearly a quarter of people in the United States rarely trust the news and other information they read on social media, another Statista survey reveals. But what about the other three-quarters who may put themselves and others at risk by trusting everything they read? This proliferation of harmful fake news is raising the question of how social media platforms can tackle the balance between free speech and false information — and whether those platforms are obligated to do so at all.
The nation is more divided than ever, and it’s largely up to the media to find a way to regulate disinformation. But does doing so run contrary to our free speech rights? To better assess this dilemma, it’s essential to look at how fake news really spreads and affects people, along with whether governments and platforms should mitigate the escalation.
How Does Fake News Actually Spread?
“Spreading like wildfire” is a term that perfectly describes the sharing of fake news once it goes viral. But first it has to gain steam among everyday social media users. Typically, fake news stories start out as deliberate misinformation or as accidentally inaccurate information that someone didn’t fact-check before reposting.
The first type often involves information that purposefully promotes a certain point of view or a person and omits any negative facts, similar to propaganda meant to change the way people think about a subject. The second is often a result of misinterpreted satire or even a snippet of a parody or a joke that people unintentionally take seriously. The difference lies in intent, too: The first type is meant to deceive, and the second is meant to entertain. But both can have similar effects.
Normally, the sharing of fake news starts among smaller groups before reaching increasingly wider audiences on social media. The news first spreads among groups of people with similar interests or among close friends. They repost something on their social media feeds when they find it interesting or shocking or when it reinforces their points of view. Then, curious people and friends of friends may start to repost it to their circles, the members of which then share the news further. Soon, the inaccurate piece of information has reached the masses before it’s been properly fact-checked (or questioned at all).
At this stage, the fake news might go viral. According to Oxford University and the Reuters Institute , social media personalities with large followings are often the culprits. They’re considered “super-spreaders” who can very easily share inaccurate information with their impressionable followers (whom they tend to have a lot of). If you have an extremely active network, you might also frequently come across false information shared between your own friends and family.
How Serious Is the Fake News Problem on Social Media?
To evaluate how powerful fake news is, it helps to look at some examples of incidents when viral news turned out to be complete misinformation. The majority of many of these recent “facts” tend to focus on the coronavirus pandemic and the 2020 election; however, fake news can encompass just about any topic. Below are two examples of viral news that turned out to be factually false.
The Original Claim: An NPR study revealed that 25 million votes cast for Hillary Clinton in 2016 were fake.
The Breakdown: These claims originally came from a website called YourNewsWire, which stated that the report was made by the Pew Research Center — an organization that’s generally regarded as one of the most credible, unbiased polling centers in the United States — with statements cited from an InfoWars article. The source of this information was twisted to fit a narrative trying to invalidate Clinton’s popular-vote victory. It turned out that the original report the fake news was based on was actually made in 2012 and stated that 24 million voter registrations were no longer valid due to deaths or were inaccurate due to voters moving to other states, not that they had voted fraudulently. It had nothing to do with the results of the 2016 election.
The Original Claim: Page 132 of a mysterious Pfizer “vaccine report” stated the vaccine could cause birth defects via genetic manipulation.
The Breakdown: A viral photo shared on social media stated that page 132 of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine safety instructions revealed that the vaccine may lead to birth defects. It was accompanied by a link that took users to the alleged instructions. However, this link only led to documentation from a publicly available Pfizer clinical trial rather than the official government document. Furthermore, page 132 outlined abbreviations, not fertility impact information. Another page contained a brief mention that trial patients should avoid getting pregnant for 28 days after receiving the last dose of the vaccine — common pharmaceutical advice for all vaccines in relation to pregnancies.
There are costs to this type of fake news; when people believe it and spread it, it can put others in danger. For example, in the case of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation — and fake news about the virus itself — consequences can be dire. BBC reports that, in addition to an unchecked increase in the spread of the novel coronavirus because fake news led people to believe the virus was a hoax, people put their own and others’ lives at risk in various ways as a result of “facts” they learned about COVID-19 on social media. Arson, assaults, attacks and other notable acts of violence occurred, all of which pose “potential health threat[s]” both to believers of the fake news and those who speak out against those who believe it.
What Role Does Freedom of Speech Play?
Fake news clearly has the potential to cause harm. But does that mean the social media platforms where it spreads are obligated to take steps to reduce users’ exposure to potentially harmful information? Many people cite the First Amendment in justifying the argument that social media sites shouldn’t be held accountable for the damaging fake news that proliferates on them.
The First Amendment is a section of the Constitution’s Bill of Rights that protects, among other things, freedom of speech — our right to express ourselves, our ideas and our opinions without being punished for doing so. This makes content regulation a much harder task online. Unless misinformation presents serious harm, the content of fake news is generally protected by the First Amendment. And some people argue it should remain protected because censorship would be a form of oppression and a violation of human rights.
In contrast, those who argue freedom of expression doesn’t fully apply to fake news note that the First Amendment doesn’t necessarily protect an individual’s right to lie or to “intentionally mislead an audience and sway public opinion for political gain,” according to the Center on Human Rights Education . In addition, according to Dr. John L. Vile, the dean of political science at Middle Tennessee State University, “the First Amendment is designed to further the pursuit of truth, [but] it may not protect individuals who…display actual malice by knowingly publishing false information or publishing information ‘with reckless disregard for the truth.'”
While it’s valid to point out the dangers of government censorship, it’s equally important to acknowledge the dangers of spreading false information and to demand change.
What Can Be Done to Regulate Fake News?
It’s clear that fake news can spread quickly — so quickly that it may appear nearly impossible to contain. So what can be done to balance free speech with accountability and potentially stem the flow of all the fakeness? It’s relatively easy, at least on a personal level, to create new consumption habits by making a concerted effort to seek out fact-checking websites — two reliable choices are Snopes and FactCheck.org — and verify a claim’s veracity. But that alone doesn’t stop fake news from spreading.
While social media platforms may not be legally obligated to protect users from fake news, they may be morally compelled to do so. If they can recognize that their platforms, by design, are contributing to the dissemination of harmful media, they should take it upon themselves to place limits on that information. It may not be possible for governments to step in and levy restrictions without compromising or violating freedom of speech — and it may not be their place to do so. “In that case,” states the Center on Human Rights Education , “the onus to address this issue should not rest solely on the government. Corporations such as Facebook and Google should ensure that the entities responsible for creating inaccurate content are regulated appropriately.”
Fortunately, it appears that some sites are working towards this. NBC News reported that, during the second quarter of 2020, Facebook removed 22.5 million posts containing hate speech and 7 million posts “sharing false information about the novel coronavirus, including content that promoted fake preventative measures and exaggerated cures.” This is a step in the right direction, to be sure, but Facebook, other platforms and even media outlets will need to increase these efforts if real change is to be achieved.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. These are the little things that come together to form what we like to call social media. Whats the big deal about social media anyway? Well, its a lot bigger of a deal than you think. Thus far in my research, Ive come to find out that all of these social medias have formed little monsters out of all of us. Lets take a look into our lives for a second. How many conversations do you have a day? Out of those conversations, how many of them can you actually talk to the person with direct eye contact? Not very many of the conversations right? I very much believe that being on social medias have a very big impact on having a face to face conversation with someone. 93% of teens (12 to 17) use the internet. Of this 93%, 73% have a social network (Reich 357). Take a minute to really think about that statistic. That is a lot of kids that have some kind of social network. Then think about the fact that kids spend 3+ hours a day on any given social network. Between that, school, and other activities, that doesnt leave that kid very much time to just sit down, relax, and have a conversation with someone. Heres another question; how young is too young to have a social media account? About a week ago, I was minding my own business walking through the mall when I noticed two younger girls hanging out. I would say they were around the age of about ten or eleven.
Mabry 2 Everything seemed to be perfectly normal about them until I noticed that they both had cell phones. I thought to myself what girl that young needs to have a cell phone? I was interested to see what they were doing because they were both so concentrated on the task at hand. So naturally, I walked passed them and peeked at their phones. They were both on Facebook. 8- to 18-year-olds who spent more time with media reported being less content (Pea 328). Personally, I think that its sad that both of these girls being as young as they are couldnt even hang out with each other because they were both caught up in something completely different. They were alone together. I started thinking about the fact that if these girls are already starting their lives living on their cell phones, what is it going to be like when they have to apply for a job and they have to talk to the boss directly. Is that going to be hard for them to do? I think that its going to be hard for them to try and create some kind of relationship with their boss/coworkers if they cant even make good eye-contact with them. Relationships. Now thats a tricky subject. Because interactions that occur via a screen often lack face-to-face cues such as gestures, gaze, voice, and other body language cues, online communication may be less rich than traditional face-to-face interactions. Online contexts also allow users to interact with much larger numbers of people than offline contexts. Thus, it is possible that the opportunity to interact with a variety of people, in a potentially less personal way, may provide fewer opportunities for more intimate interactions and consequently interfere with the development of close connections (Reich 357). I think that nowadays, a lot of people try to create relationships on the internet with people that they dont even know. They talk online for weeks and sometimes months, but when they finally talk face to face its awkward because they havent had to do it. An increasingly common scenario involves initial introductory contact via computer mediated communication (CMC) which leads to subsequent face to face (FTF)
Mabry 3 contact. Thus our very first contact with an unfamiliar person is increasingly occurring not in a FTF meeting or over the telephone, but via CMC (Markovitzky 359). In todays society I think that this kind of behavior is very typical. It is viewed as being completely ok. Personally, I believe that you cannot find a real relationship through a social networking site because I dont think that its real. When you get into a relationship, you should be able to talk to each other like youre best friends, but I feel like with an online relationship, you wouldnt be able to do that. One thing that a lot of social networkers have a hard time with is just being their selves. Online, they can be a big, brave, bold person, but when you talk to them face to face, they wont make eye contact with you, they get really distracted, and they seem to be somewhat stressed out. Most people that spend a lot of time online tend to pick up social anxiety. The reason for this is because they spend so much time on the internet because they feel like they cant get rejected or made fun of. But that they forget what its like to be around people, causing them to be very stressed out. Kiesler, Siegel, and McGuire (1984) suggested that the elimination of nonverbal features of speech, physical scrutiny, and pressure for real time response would reduce concerns over social rejection, which is a primary focus of social anxiety (Markovitzky 360). 3,000 friends; only knows about six. This statement is very true for a lot of people today. We have become so addicted to Facebook, Twitter, etc. that we gain all of these friends that we dont even know. It becomes more of a popularity contest than an actual friend site. Out of all of your friends on any given social networking site, how many of them do you actually talk to or actually know well enough to sit down and have a face to face conversation with? Probably not that many. I believe that we gain so many friends/followers that when it comes time to actually talk to our friends in real life, that we forget how to do that. Not only does this affect our friends, it affects our families too. I like to go and sit with my grandparents and just talk to them. The
Mabry 4 way that they were raised, it was considered ride if you didnt make eye contact while you were talking. Naturally, I was raised the same way. A lot of them time, the older generation deems our generation as being rude because we dont know how to make proper eye contact with them. I believe that to a certain point, this can be very true because we spend so much time on social networking sites that we dont have to make eye contact with anybody because were just staring at a computer screen. All in all, I think that social medias have become an addiction for many people and it causes them to become someone that theyre not. It can have a very big impact on your life if youre not careful with them. Dont abuse the privilege of social medias, and actually take the time to go out and talk face to face with your friends and family. In the long run, I think that this will help all of us to become better people.

Media is abundant in today's society, from newspapers that have been tossed onto lawns, to a cell phone which can fit in a pant pocket, and the use of technology has greatly changed society's ways of learning. As a college student, the value of technology such as a laptop has changed the style in which work will be completed. Media used to mostly be on paper, however, in recent years, it is almost fully digitized for the convenience. Social media is changing how we learn in the classroom to become more beneficial by constantly evolving, communicate, and converting to learning management systems, however, this comes at the cost of students losing their ability to socialize.
Social media, specifically for education over the years has the spotlight when it comes to evolving technology. Take, for instance, classrooms. Classrooms have gone from lectures that were face-to-face to being through a computer screen. When I was in elementary school, standard whiteboards, markers, and taking notes, with paper and pencil were the norm for me. Being raised by my mom she never was accustomed to the idea of putting me in front of a computer screen to learn. She was more prevalent in teaching me my letters and how to count the traditional way. Now being eighteen, I am almost always in front of a screen. Schools have now have resorted to using computers and submitting papers online to go green and save paper. Even in college, I find myself creating PowerPoint presentations, working on assignments and having to submit them online, versus receiving papers and handing them in manually. With our current technology, it seems like we can receive any type of information just from our phone alone. Technology will always continue to evolve and make our lives easier as well as having a great impact on our everyday life.
Benefits of Educational Media
Since educational 'media' is something we can all see and share with our friends, it has become significantly easier to work in groups as well as work on projects from home versus having to meet up with the whole group. For instance, while working on a group project and a classmate happens to get sick or is unable to attend class, it is still possible to communicate to said person and work on the project. This has happened to me in several cases. One of those being in seventh grade in Geography class, while my group and I were making a project on creating a game to help remember the countries in England. We had received our groups and prompt as well as a due date. Everyone was thrilled at the opportunity to work on something more interesting than memorizing the countries in England the more traditional way of studying. It was our third day working on the project and one of our group members was unable to attend the class that day, it turned out he was sick with the flu. However, the rest of the group and I were able to contact him to understand what was going on. By having the ability to connect and communicate with the group with the help of social media, it made it significantly easier to get our work done, as well as not have as much confusion to what was happening.
Social media in education appeals to all different types of people, whether they are young or old or of any race since there is a never-ending supply of educational sources online every day. When I started high school it felt like all I was using was computers, I could access all my school homework by the click of a button. All of my teachers are able to upload their work online to a learning management system website called Schoology. This is the equivalent to Blackboard to keep all of my given assignments in order. This is a huge educational bonus for all students, especially those who tend to get sick or just miss school a lot. It can keep those students from missing too many assignments and help hand in all their work. While on the other hand, newspapers and the news can appeal to older generations that are not keen on the use of technology. Many older generations do not understand technology very well, but once they get accustomed to it, they too can use media to connect with long lost friends, read the news online and learn about current events.
New Opportunities of Social Media
With education being converted more to online, being able to study has been made easier for students of all ages. Being able to create and study flashcards on websites such as Quizlet have aided me greatly in high school. Another plus to having education more digitized it that it is harder to misplace assignments. A huge majority of schools will select a learning management system. The high school that I attended used Schoology. Schoology has a similar format to Facebook. Teachers post updates on what assignments had to be completed as well as due dates for those assignments. As much as I missed being able to write my assignments with pencil and paper, the convenience of being able to write my assignments on my laptop was all worth the trade. While In middle school, I repeatedly forget my assignments at home a lot ultimately resulting in a poor grade, but once my assignments were switched to being online, that helped me keep track of them all and in turn them in on time.
The downfall of having new technology in our learning environment is the fact that students lose the ability to socialize. More or less in social situations such as the classroom, or even in public. I have realized in my personal experience that before phones and computers were so heavily depended on, it was easier to not only keep a conversation but also easier to give presentations in front of a classroom. On the first day of college-level English as soon as I walked in everyone was on their phones. Nobody said a single word until the professor walked in and had everyone introduce themselves. Even when asked to do so it seemed like it would have been easier to pull teeth. Everyone seems more invested in posting their thoughts to twitter rather than sharing them with the student sitting next to them. After I graduate college, I plan on being a lawyer and I need to know how to talk to people face to face and not hide behind a screen. Being social and verbal will be an important part of my life and job, while other students seem to forget their whole life does not revolve around their phones, and that once they graduate they will need to break away from the dependence they have on technology.
The Impact of Social Media
Educational Media has deeply impacted everybody's life, including mine. Since it is so abundant in today's society, it is a hard thing to miss. While there is greatness in social media helping people reconnect and presenting the news. There is also a curse that tags along with it, being that everyone can see what is posted as well as it never completely being deleted. Media is something that has always been available to us and something that always will. Whether we as a society enjoy media or not, we all need to learn to use media to our advantage because it is growing every day, which means it is here to stay.
