Self-awareness is a characteristic defined by one’s comprehension of their personality and beliefs. In some way, it can serve as a guide in helping others, depending on the scale of that feature. Unsurprisingly, this implies that self-awareness may play a rather significant role in human services. For the following essay, I will use my test results and explain how the information received from them may be relevant to my field.

For this essay, I have taken a quiz called How Self-Aware Are You? The results have stated that I am 100 percent self-aware. According to the depiction, I have exceptional introspection skills, and I am capable of analyzing and understanding the things that irritate me and the cause of said irritation (Quizony, n. d.). Moreover, it says that besides respecting myself and my individuality, I am dedicated to improving my personality based on a sincere and accurate perception of who I am as a person. In my opinion, the results have overvalued me because I believe that I have some gaps in my mental flexibility and open-mindedness.

While I do not agree that I am necessarily 100 percent self-aware, I do agree that I aim to improve myself and my personality. Besides, I clearly understand how valuable it may be in my occupation. There is a belief that it is impossible to be a good human services worker without being self-aware because self-awareness helps one understand others. I consider that to be an accurate statement because, as a human service worker, I should help people combat their issues and struggles. Depending on the direction I may take in this field, I may either focus on resolving conflicts or helping abuse victims.

This emphasizes the importance of self-awareness because working in human service will involve challenging my views and understanding other people’s differences. I will be faced with views, beliefs, and actions that may contradict my own. If I am incapable of understanding myself, and my flaws, and overcoming my biases, I will not be able to provide the help my client may need. Without comprehending and analyzing myself, I will not be capable of putting myself in another person’s position. I should know how to approach their problems without judgment or any discriminatory or negative views because it is another crucial part of being self-aware. Biases or mental inflexibility will distort not only my perception of myself but the client’s issue as well.

Fortunately, there are some measures that I can take to improve my self-awareness and apply it to my field. For example, I could cease any attempts at applying my logic and my beliefs to other people, as my methods may not be suitable for my client. I may also teach myself how to be more open-minded, as I have noticed that there are some cases and circumstances that I do not fully understand because of my views. Finally, I can teach myself how to view the world from my client’s perspective instead of projecting all of my features onto them. That way, I will be able to provide the help they need to overcome their struggles.

In conclusion, self-awareness plays a significant role in the field of human services. According to my test results, I am fully self-aware and am capable of properly analyzing myself and my flaws. However, I believe that much work needs to be done, as one of the features of self-awareness involves helping clients without judgment or projecting their personal views. To combat those problems, I can teach myself how to be more mentally flexible and learn how to see the world from another person’s perspective. That way, I can ensure that my client will receive the help that they need.
