  • Autobiography of a Haunted House

Hello, my name is Haunted House, and I have a story to tell. A story of fear, mystery, and history that has been woven into the very fabric of my walls and floors.

I was built many decades ago, in a time when life was simpler, but also darker and more superstitious. My original owners were a wealthy family, who spared no expense in making me the grandest and most luxurious home in the area.

Have you ever wanted to do something so bad that it kept you up all night thinking about it?  But, for some reason something is stopping you from doing that thing. That’s a common problem; a lot of people hesitate or are scared to do things for the first time. You can never over come your fears unless you face your fears.

When I was 15 years old I thought of not going to school, so I skipped school and decided to have a walk around the  area. Out of nowhere, a big, old, gray building grabbed my attention as I stood across the block. At that moment, my mind was distracted by how old it seemed. As I got closer, the more curious I became of what was hidden behind those paled rusted doors. In that silent moment, I felt the wind blowing and heard the sound of the tree leaves hitting against each other. The building attracted me, questions began to pop in my head, why is it spooky? What made it different? Is there anyone living there? So I began to research to try to find answers to my questions I began with asking people around the neighborhood about the house.

I found out that it was the first kings’ palace that was built in Kuwait and it was called Bayan Palace. It was abandoned, and no one had lived in it for 100 years. Some of the people I talked to told scary stories about it and some believed that it was haunted with ghosts and evil spirits. As I studied the palace I took a lot of pictures of it. The next day, I couldn’t keep it out of my thoughts, so I went to our history teacher to show him the pictures and find out more about the palace. I was not the only one with questions, at the same time there were two boys asking the teacher about the palace too. We talked a lot about the palace. Sharing a common interest the boys and I continued to talk and get to know each other.

The first guy was named Ali, he is a short and white. Ali’s father owned a lot of companies and he was the Minister of Education back in Kuwait. The other guy is named Abdullah; he is a free runner and gymnast. He has had a lot of adventures in haunted houses.

After that day we hung out together a few times. We made the decision to go the palace and to investigate what is inside.  Later, as we sat in Starbucks arguing over when would be the best time to begin our adventure, an old man came over to the table. His face felt familiar like I had seen him before and I felt a strange, eerie feeling about him. He said, “Hi young gentlemen were you talking about Bayan palace?” We all looked at each other and answered “yes, why?” he whispered “didn’t you hear about the missing man that went inside and never came back again?” We all were shocked. Abdullah said “what do you mean by that he didn’t come back, because it’s a haunted house? Huh, I don’t believe that can you prove it to me?” he laughed softly and responded “It’s just my advice to you stay away from that place. I don’t recommend that you go.” That’s the last thing he said and then he walked away.

We decided to give up and thought it was best not to go to that place any way. But, we all know that inside we were curious and we all want to discover what was in the palace. So we met together and logged on to a computer finding a chat room about the palace and chatted with someone about that house. We were all shocked when he said that he had entered Bayan palace! We all asked if we could meet him and if he would call us and tell us more about his experience. He just answered with a “yes anytime”. His name is Nasser, he was 22 years old and he is from Lebanon. He is a business man that works for two companies, one of them in Lebanon and the other one in Kuwait.  He motivated all of us and rekindled our curiosity to enter that palace. Nasser said that when he entered the palace he did not feel anything strange and that there was nothing to be afraid of.  He had only entered into the palace for few minutes and then stormed out immediately. At that point we said that it wasn’t worth it to go to that haunted palace, we were busy and all had our final exams and decided we would not go until we had finished our school work.

Then came the  we were finally ready to explore the palace, we got our tools, we charged our mobile phones, made sure we got lights, snacks, and everything we needed. We then started to walk to Bayan Palace. We were all both afraid and excited at the same time. No one spoke or said anything from the moment we moved, we were all nervous. We arrived and we looked at each other’s faces, we all had nervous and scared expressions. We went inside because from the gate it was too dark and we couldn’t see anything. I turned the hand light on and began to feel the breeze on my face and it was cold, although it wasn’t cold outside.

I noticed on the wall there were a lot of paintings and marks. I touched the wall it was rough and a thick layer of dust covered the ground. From outside the building seemed smaller but inside we found out it was bigger than we thought so we decided to split into groups. Each group went their own way and we would meet again and call each other if there is something creepy. We went to the basement floor it looked like a jail. All I heard is the wind blowing and my footsteps we didn’t find anything creepy yet we searched the whole basement. I had no idea why my heart was racing, I felt scared every footstep I took the thoughts of what the people said about the palace it gave me chills and I started to believe it too. We decided to go back upstairs. As I was walking up the stairs I stopped and heard a movement coming towards me from behind. I began to rush up the stairs and started to panic my friend rushed behind me, all I wanted was to get out.  My friend came to me asking, “did you see anything? Why did you run? Are you okay?” I felt somewhat embarrassed and said “I was just joking with you guys” he got angry and pushed me and said “don’t do it again and let’s continue searching and put an end to the myths.” So we continued on.

I felt better with him beside me and started to convince myself that it’s all a myth. As we walked upstairs there was this huge sealed door marked with an X my friends got together and tried to open the door but we couldn’t, we gave up, it was starting to get late so we decided to end it and leave.

I had to go back home so I left and started to walk by home. As I was walking I was feeling a huge disappointment that I didn’t get to see what was behind the sealed door. This thought made me more curious and I wanted to know why it is marked with an X.

The next morning I got a text from Ali telling me to come to the neighborhood park. I got up, washed my face, got dressed, and left the house heading to the park. I arrived at the park and I saw the whole gang there waiting for me so I went to greet them.  While I was greeting them I noticed Nasser wasn’t with them and I saw Ali holding a Hammer in his hand.  He told me now we can open that sealed door I smiled and started to think is it worth it?  I know I was curious and disappointed that I didn’t get to see what was there so I needed to choose. The whole gang was waiting for my answer and I nodded “ok let’s go”.

As we were walking back to the abandoned palace I asked about Nasser and why he didn’t show up, they told me you “didn’t talk to him?” He was to fly to Lebanon, he was too busy and still needed to pack his bag. I felt the group wasn’t complete without him. I wondered if the real reason he did not come was fear.

When we arrived to the palace I looked at my friends with a smile and said “let’s do it!” We entered together and headed to the sealed marked door. Ali said “move away”, as he got the hammer and started to pound the chains on the door. He was surprised that he didn’t have to hit too hard before the chain fell off. The door was opened we went inside and suddenly we thought that we saw something move at the end of the corridor. We were running trying to search and wanted to find out what was that. I thought it was a small child running; we’ve turned off our flashlights in order not to scare whatever that distracted us. All of the sudden, I felt something crawling around my left leg but, thankfully when I focused the light on it and it turned out to be a cat.  I had faced my fear and realized that in the end there was nothing to be afraid of, it was all in my mind.

By susan gitenstein assadi.

Not every house is nice, friendly, kind from the outside they wear “masks” just like us humans are living situation isn't any less different. Well my house uses to be a relaxing, amazing place almost like a heaven to me. I felt secured, un-toxic safe from my social life in school. But that all change in a snap his finger at that moment deleting everything in front of me. All the feeling I had about my home being eliminated out of my mind. From back then to now it’s still the same as history repeating itself l like I was waking up the same day nothing had changed or even moved at all just waiting for me to wake up from my little nap from reality. Round 15 of this rotting hells named “home”. Were the true sight of my home coming out to play with my soul the mask behind my “good family”. Years past but no progress was done or changed. My home was a haunted house to me I can hear whisper of negativity, doubt, things I don’t want to hear. Stupid, idiot, why can’t you be like him or her, how are you going to live without me, you look disgusting in that, why are you like this... It’s like ghost are talking to me haunting me day and night those words and saying keep repeating losing my skill to even choice for myself. I doubt my skills and my ability to do any my test thinking about getting the wrong answer even though I was right. Telling me to choose a side mother, father, your sibling getting choose one. There so much fighting between the family the younger siblings getting hit in the cross fire. Valley’s and mountains have been created between party. Just like cavemen tribes. Fighting constantly like a never-ending war. Projectiles made of anger insulting words getting thrown around family members trust slowly crumbling down like ancient kingdom wall getting demolish out of existence. Everyone must make a mask just to talk to each other they try talking to each other normally but there needed required to be aggressive. Yeah that all can change but it but at this point. My life at home is a bipolar warzone I got to be careful in what I do. I must be useful at home if not my ears get blown up in insults like a land mine in the ground. My voice, opinions are ticking time bomb anything I say will be used against me. Anything I try to pleasure my mother her. The way to avoid it is to be quiet, listen, be a good boy. Like I was a slave. U couldn’t take it so I try to do something about the issue. I was defenseless a goodie two shoes not able to speak up. I was like a blood-filled punching bag getting hit by insult from in and outside my home. I used to not care until the events started to brew up. The words “hurt” me deeply crying silently in my bedroom not able to show my emotions because “guys don’t cry, and I will hit you to give you a reason to cry.” Those quotes made my soul harden I couldn’t share my emotion I try but my mouth didn’t benefit me to speak. I scream everything out of my head but all I can hear the silent out of mouth the wind coming out but no words. My mental state was unstable I get easily taken advantage. My whole life is all for my little sister she the only one I care for she the reason I wake up each day. That how my living situation is today. Now everything is starting to look up but every good thing has to end then one day I build of my confidence to come out of the closet I am sick of running and hiding. Time to be my very hero and be brave but the coming out to my mother has backlashed and backfired. My very own mother called me a she and I thought I will dress up as female to be with another man I have an attracted towards. But you must live with them even though they hate you and you hate them you can't do anything about it. Not everything is like it seems they are kind to you when you're there with them but before you leave to go home it turn into the devil's furnace for the rest of the family inside. Even though family, friends, coworkers whatever starts to push you down and throw you around like a rag doll just keep in mind. Your life is in front of you keep going even if life wasn’t to screw with it don’t let it, you're going make out this hell hole living happily the true happiness you been dreaming having your own home and life.

Creative Writing: The Haunted House Essay

We played in the woods until dark. The moon cast an eerie glow on the trees as we ran around. A bat flew overhead and I ducked. It was my turn to count for hide -n- seek. “One, two, three four, fi- Aaaaahhhhh. What was that?” I asked myself outloud. I began in the direction of the screams when I came upon a house. The front door was wide open. I saw someone dash across the opening. Then the screaming began again. “Aaaaahhhh! Help us Alex! We’re in here!” The sound was clearly coming from the house. I took a hesitant step forward. And another and another until I reached the house. Almost all the windows were shattered and the shutters hung by a single hinge.

The moon cast a frightening shadow on the house making it seem inhabited by an unfriendly guest. I was more nervous than ever. When I reached the steps I debated with myself whether to go in the house and find my friends. I take another step. Creek! The stairs dip under my weight. I grab onto the handrail but it falls to the ground with a thud. Another scream from upstairs grabs my attention. I push open the door a little wider and take a step. A rush of cold air circulates around me. I feel goosebumps prickling up my arms and legs. I walk slowly to the nearby staircase. They creak under me as I start to ascend. With every step I get more frightened.

Then I finally reach the top. The upper level is divided into two sections. Right and left. I decided on right. I walked into the first room and was surprised to see nothing. All the rooms seemed to be connected by smaller doorways in the corners for a smaller being to get through easier. Shadows danced off walls making figures appear. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw blond hair connected to a pale figure pass by in the hallway. I immediately run after it silently, thinking it was my best friend Sam. I turn into the hallway and see her dart down the stairs. “Sam! Wait!”

She doesn’t listen. She was off onto the main floor and into what once would have been a living area. When I arrived, she was hiding behind a chair that was still standing up even after all the termites chewed through two other legs and were working on a third. “Sam, why are you in this creepy old house? I think we need a rule saying “No hiding in creepy old houses and scaring people half to death!” All she did was play with her hair. A large thud sounded from upstairs which grabbed her attention. “We have to get out of here now.” Was all she said.

“What was that, Sam?” I ask, clearly frightened. She didn’t say anything and that’s when I noticed how pale she had gotten and the large bags under her eyes. “Okay then.” I said. “But what about our friends?” She looked up. “They aren’t hiding here.” Was all she said. Help! “What was that Sa- “Go, go, go! He’s coming!” “Who’s coming?” “Just GO!” She yelled. We ran all the way out of the forest and into town. It was a good three mile sprint. “What about our friends?” I asked. “I already told you. They aren’t in there. But they are still in the forest.” She noticed my grim expression.

“Oh, they’re fine we can go and get them tomorrow.” She said with an uneasy smile. “Where exactly are they in the woods?” I asked. I could tell Sam wasn’t telling me something. I went home scared half to death. I got in the middle of mom and dad not trusting my dreams were going to be pleasant. I fell asleep quickly and tried to think about anything happy and cheerful. Like the time I learned all my times tables at age six. Or how I got a scholarship to go to a math and science camp. Possibly the time my birthday party was canceled because I was “sick with the flu.” I never wanted that party to happen because mom invited my whole grade. Even the boys! Well that was in fifth grade and I hope that never happens again.

Or how I got a cast for helping a kitten that was blind cross the road even though I tripped on a rock and broke my wrist. And volunteering at the library for two hours every day for three years. These thoughts filled my dreams and I began to replay them as if they were happening right before my eyes. I awoke to rain on my window and thunder that could shake the house. I poured milk and cereal into my bowl and stood up to go and get a spoon. A large thud coming from the kitchen grabbed my attention. I walked in and saw Sam soaking wet pounding on the window. “Sam, what are you doing here?”

“We need to go back to that house in the woods.” I was speechless on why she would want to go back. Even before we heard those thuds from the second floor. “No. I’m not going with you. Even if our friends are there. They probably know how to get out of a house by themselves.” Sam replied, “We need to help them. They are in grave danger. If we don’t help them soon, they won’t come out of that house alive.” I thought it over for awhile. “What do you mean, “they won’t come out of that house alive? It’s not like you come back after you die.” I reply. Sam gives me a hesitant look but continues on.

“Nevermind that right now. We need to go soon. Get some supplies. Like a knife or scissors.” “Why? Oh I know. It’s because they are in the living room knitting and they just got done making a super long scarf. They need the scissors or a knife to cut the yarn.” “Now is not the time for jokes, Alex.”

“Okay, okay but let me go get my dad because it seems serious enough.” “No, don’t get him. We need to go alone.” “Fine, but I’m bringing my phone and if anything, and I mean ANYTHING creepy or weird happens, I’m leaving.” “Okay, fine.”

Chapter Two We left my house with a letter opener and a pair of dull safety-scissors. Not my ideal weapons but Sam said they’d do. As we walked down the driveway, old lady Rhonda stopped us. “Where do you think your goin’ wit duz weapons?” “To mom’s work.” I replied.

Sam breathed a sigh of relief when old lady Rhonda said, “Okay, you gers be carefull and don’t you go by that creepy old house in de woods.” What old lady Rhonda said was shocking. How could she know that’s exactly where we’re going? Sam replied, “How do you know about that house?”

“Not a reason you need to know. Now let me warn ya again, don’t go near that house after 4 o’clock in afternoon. You got dat?” “Yes Mrs. Rhonda.” We replied in unison. We started our way in the opposite direction because it was clear Rhonda was watching us closely. “Let’s go this way.” Sam said.

“Are you sure we should go? You know, after what Rhonda said?” “It’s fine, Alex. We just need to go get our friends.” “Wait Sam, how do you know they need help? Ooooooohhhhhhhhh, are you telepathic or can predict the future?” I laughed at my own joke and Sam started sprinting as we reached the edge of the forest. We were about to enter when Rhona jumped out of a nearby bush. “Gers, what are you doin’ over here by the entrance to the woods? Yer mama’s work is clear on de other side of town. You gers have no business being here. Now go back to yer house!” Rhonda made us run to the other side of town as a punishment. It was a good three mile sprint. When we got home, we were soaked in perspiration. “I’m gonna go get some water for us.” I said.

“What did you think you were going to do in those woods, young lady?” Mom said. “We were just going to play hide-n-seek.” I replied. “Then what were you doing with scissors and a letter opener? “Cut some flowers for you?” “You are grounded for two weeks. Go to your room. I’m sorry Sam but I’m gonna have to take you home now.” “Okay. Can you drop me off at the gas station on 6th street?” Sam says from the living room. “Yeah okay. Are you sure? I can drop you off at your house.” “No it’s fine, really.” I hear her whisper.

“Okay. Well I’ll see you tomorrow.” Sam replies, “Okay. Bye Mrs. Alex!” “Bye!”

Chapter Three Sam’s P.O.V. After I said bye to Mrs. Alex, I started off towards the woods. When I reached the woods, Rhonda jumped out at of a bush, again. “Come on Sam, I’ll take you home.” Rhonda said, not even surprised I was here again. We started walking when we came to the house.

“Well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, Rhonda.” “Yes you will. Tell yer uncle to stop scarin’ people.” “I’ll try.” “Okay good. I don’t need anymore people disappearing.” I walked into the house and yelled for mom but no one answered. I walked into the kitchen and started looking for food. “Grandma! I found your weird potion in the fridge! You know, the one you’ve been looking for! It’s in a green bottle!” I said. “Oh, thank you deary.” My grandmother said from behind the fridge door. “Grandma, you scared me!”

“Okay. Well your mother is upstairs. Look in the tunnels. Okay?” “Okay.” I replied as I started up the stairs. When I reached the top, I made sure to listen to make sure Uncle didn’t come home early. When I didn’t hear any screams of fright from uncle’s victims, I started into the first room. “Mom. Where are you? Uncle’s not here so we don’t need to hide.” I said as I went through all the passages, but no sign indicated mom was here. “Mom! Where are you!” I said as I made it to another living area. “MO-”

“Shhh. Look over there.” Mom pointed to the far side of the living room to five bodies laying near the couch. “What are they doing here, UNCONSCIOUS!” “Apparently they were playing hide -n- seek and they decided to hide in our house.” I was at a loss of words. Once (if they ever were released) they went back into the outside world, they would discover our secret. “We have to make sure Uncle doesn’t find them!” I said.

Haunted house stories have been around for a long time, but there is something about this trope that makes horror authors want to keep writing about them. Maybe, it is because there’s something very twisted in stories about places that were supposed to give shelter turning against the main characters.

One of the scariest stories about haunted houses is Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher—a Gothic fiction about an unnamed person who visits his ill friend Roderick Usher in his house. Another is Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of the Hill House—1959 horror novel that follows an occult scholar, his assistant, a fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists, and an heir during their stay at a haunted mansion located between many hills.

A Visit to the Haunted House Narrative Essay

Angela, Alanna, Megan, and Claire were best friends who decided to have a sleepover for Halloween at Alanna’s house. However, they stumbled upon an article about a supposedly haunted house and decided to try to stay there for the night. When they arrived at the house, they saw two ghost-like figures in the window and heard a threatening voice. They tried to leave but the door wouldn’t open and the ghostly figures killed them all. Weeks later, the cops couldn’t find any trace of the girls and the house remained abandoned.

Alanna has dark brown hair, brown eyes, and is pretty crazy. Megan has dark/light brown hair, hazel eyes, and is very unique. Lastly Claire has light brown hair, hazel eyes, and is really hyper. One day after class Alanna and Megan decide to have a sleepover for Halloween. When they told Claire and Angela their idea, both agreed. So it was set on Halloween they would all have a sleepover at Alanna’s house so they thought.

When Halloween finally came the girls were so excited. When they arrived at Alanna’s house, they decided to go to the store and buy some “junk” food (such as chips, candy, etc.). When they got to the store, Kroger. They saw an article for an old disserted house, which some people said was “haunted.” At the bottom of the page it said ‘feel free to stay a night if you dare.” Then it said “Beware once you enter you may not come out.”

After they read that they decided to attempt to stay the whole night in the so called “haunted house.” When the girls got their they saw two objects standing in the window. The objects looked like faded people, kind of like a ghost. When the girls entered it was dark, cold, and scary, very scary. There were real live bats and spider webs everywhere. Suddenly they heard a noise “BOOM!” then a voice followed saying “I’m coming for you and I’ll make sure you don’t survive.”

Then the girls ran to the door to leave but it wouldn’t open, no matter how hard they tried. Next the two objects that were in the window came down the stairs and killed each and every one of them. A few weeks later the cops came to the house, because they got several calls from parents on regarding were their children are. When they opened the door there, was no sign of the girls. And no one dared to ever set foot into the house again!

The Evening

Ukraine’s latest loss may be worse than expected.

Also, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case on race and admissions. Here’s the latest at the end of Tuesday.

Two soldiers in camouflage uniforms turning away from a howitzer with their fingers in their ears as smoke comes out of the weapon.

By Matthew Cullen

The fall of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka to Russia over the weekend was a major symbolic loss for Ukraine and the West. But while American officials initially argued that it was not a significant strategic setback, that calculus could soon change.

My colleagues reported today that hundreds of Ukrainian troops may have disappeared or been captured during Ukraine’s chaotic retreat from Avdiivka. Two soldiers with knowledge of the retreat estimated that 850 to 1,000 troops had been captured or were missing, a range that Western officials said seemed accurate.

The devastating losses could deal a blow to Ukraine’s morale, which has eroded after last year’s failed counteroffensive and the recent removal of a top commander. Officials have said they want to mobilize up to 500,000 more people, but the capture of soldiers could make the effort to recruit them more challenging.

In the U.S., the Biden administration said it was preparing “major sanctions” against Russia in response to the death of the opposition leader Aleksei Navalny.

In Spain, police said the body of Maksim Kuzminov, a Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine, was found riddled with bullets .

Justices declined to hear a case on race and admissions

The Supreme Court today cleared the way for the use of admissions criteria intended to diversify the student body of an elite public high school in Virginia, declining to hear a challenge to the school’s policy.

By turning down the case, a majority of the court’s justices signaled that they were not ready to revisit the role that race can legally play in school admissions, months after the court sharply curtailed affirmative action programs in higher education.

The case centered on Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., which adopted what it said were race-neutral admissions standards amid concerns about how few Black and Hispanic students attended the school. The school board eliminated a rigorous entrance examination and offered admission to the top students from each of the area’s middle schools rather than the top applicants from any school. A group of parents objected to the plan and sued to stop it.

The U.S. vetoed a U.N. resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza

The U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution put forth by Algeria that would have called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, saying it would jeopardize an ongoing effort to broker a deal that would release hostages from Gaza. It was the third time Washington had blocked a call for an end to fighting .

However, in a shift, the U.S. drafted an alternative resolution that calls for a temporary halt in fighting “as soon as practicable” and for the release of hostages. The resolution, which is still in the early stages of negotiations, also states that Israel’s army must not carry out an offensive in Rafah, in southern Gaza, under the current conditions.

A baseball star is disrupting California’s senate race

Steve Garvey, a Republican who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s, is running a long-shot bid to succeed the late Senator Dianne Feinstein of California. With just two weeks before the state’s primary, he has done little campaigning and raised just a sliver of the money he would probably need to win.

Yet the 75-year-old political novice could still beat out experienced Democrats for second place in California’s unusual “jungle” primary, which would advance him to November’s general election. Representative Adam Schiff, the Democrat leading the race, has spent $10 million on ads that ostensibly attack Garvey, but that have most likely rallied Republicans to his side.

Hollywood’s curmudgeon of the year.

Within the past year, the actor Jeffrey Wright has starred in films in which he has played a barking general (“Asteroid City”), a gossipy congressman (“Rustin”) and a snobby novelist (“American Fiction”). All three performances were so convincingly unsmiling and self-serious that our critic Wesley Morris declared Wright the year’s best curmudgeon.

Ahead of the Oscars on March 10, Wesley handed out several other distinctions that are unlikely to ever be etched on an Academy Award trophy, including the best drunk, the best acting above the nose and the best nervous breakdown. Check out all of his picks.
