How would moving into a "lakefront dream home" worth $1.3 million change your life? The answer to that question could win you a 3,800-square-foot Alberta home east of the Canadian Rockies.

It doesn't cost much — just $25 CAD, the equivalent of about $19 US dollars — to enter the " Write A Letter, Win A House " contest, but, if all goes well, you'll have plenty of competition. The contest's organizers are hoping that as many as 68,000 people will enter to win the lakefront home -- enough $25 CAD entries to match the house's $1.7 million CAD asking price.

To compete, homeowner hopefuls must write an essay of no more than 350 words explaining why the home would change their lives.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be a sob story, because I'm a realist in my condition," homeowner Alla Wagner, who says she needs to move out of the home due to poor health, tells CBC Calgary in an interview . Inspired by similar contests at a Maine inn and in the 1996 movie The Spitfire Grill, Wagner thinks the contest is "a most incredible way" to find the home a deserving new owner, she writes on Facebook .

The two-story home comes with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a ton of space, according to a real estate listing that has since been removed. The house's next residents can enjoy its finished basement, wine room, media room, game room and views of the lake and mountains.

The contest, which launched on Jan. 5, is accepting submissions until April 5. Finalists will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges, who will then announce the winner, according to the contest's terms and conditions . Interested parties can email letters and an e-transfer of $25 CAD to [email protected] or mail a paper letter with a check to PO Box #74, Millarville, AB Canada T0L 1K0.

Two ROTC cadets place in essay contest

Two Navy Junior ROTC cadets recently placed in the top three spots for the local 2016 National Sojourners Essay Contest.

“So I was asked to write about something that was important to me,” sophomore Kiahna Washington said. “And I chose to write about the Declaration of Independence because without the declaration of independence we would not have what we have today and we wouldn’t have the lives that we have today.”

Washington received first place and junior Addison Abucejo finished third.

“I was extremely proud of myself,” Washington said. “And I was extremely surprised because I wasn’t expecting to get first.”

Both students were presented with a certificate and a cash reward by Jim Baker, Anson Jones Chapter #507. And both of the essays have been submitted for the national competition.

“I felt pretty good,” Abucejo said. “I mean I didn’t really expect to win anything.”

Jack Dodsworth figured he was being recognized for his work in the National Sojourners Essay Contest on Sunday at the Masonic Lodge in Prince Frederick, but he had no idea he had won the nationwide contest.

“I am a little bit surprised,” said Dodsworth, who recently graduated from Calvert High School, and will study history, anthropology and archaeology at Washington College in the fall. “I’ve always been OK with writing so I entered this on the off-chance that maybe I could get a bit of a lower place, but to get first place and the grand prize, that wasn’t in my imagination at all. I am very excited.”

Entrants were reminded of a quote by Sir Winston Churchill that stated that “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” and then asked this question: “What lessons have we learned from this experiment and how can we ensure that our ‘more perfect union’ will continue to flourish for the next 200 years?”

Dodsworth was awarded a plaque and a check for $2,000 by Terry Royce, the president of Patuxent Chapter No. 522 of the National Sojourners, which is a part of the Masonic fraternity.

“I’m thrilled, I’m absolutely thrilled that someone from little Calvert County took first place in a national contest,” said Patuxent Chapter Secretary Mike O’Kelley, who estimated there were “hundreds” of entries. “I can’t imagine anything greater right now. This is awesome. And I know the commissioners feel the exact same way.”

“He’s an exceptional student and an exceptional person,” said Dodsworth’s mother, Ellen, “and it’s a great honor that he’s being awarded.”

Dodsworth also received a proclamation from the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, which was presented by Commissioner Steve Weems (R).

“Listening to his thoughts, what was clear to me was there was a lack of compromise, and the ability to compromise has somehow gone astray and we need to bring it back,” Weems said after hearing the essay. “It’s incredible [and] an awesome, awesome achievement for this young man. He’s so young, so bright, and it’s a testament to our community and our school system. It’s my honor” to present to him.

Dodsworth said it took him a whole weekend to complete his 488-word essay.

“There’s been a long history of division in the country and that can’t be denied by anybody, and it’s my belief that it’s through compromise and a union between people and an understanding that we don’t have a perfect union,” he said. “But it’s survived for 240-plus years and people are sort of forgetting that we are all Americans.”

Dodsworth, a distance runner who was captain of the cross country and track and field teams, is also a two-time winner of the Calvert County History Fair. His 4.35 grade point average was reportedly the highest among his class.
