The Paper Mills
Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.
We were staying at the nearby Landal Rockingham Forest Park and visited the Paper Mills for lunch. Parking was easy as there was plenty of spaces available in the street. We received a warm friendly welcome and were shown to our table, given menu's and... our drinks orders taken. For mains we ordered Moules Marinière and a chicken fajita flatbread from the “specials board”. Both dishes arrived in good time and were very tasty. For desserts we ordered vanilla crème brûlée that arrived still alight and sticky toffee pudding. Again both of which were very nice. We thought that the prices were a little on the high side especially when the garlic bread & flatbread appeared to be bought in mass produced items? However the service from all of the staff was friendly and efficient and overall we very much enjoyed our visit and would return and recommend. More
Our 2nd post lockdown visit, the previous one in the week the pubs re-opened. The meet and greet from the bar area wasn't particularly friendly, but serving staff were much better, efficient and pleasant. Over the years we have been here many times with varying... standards. On this occasion, as last time, the food was high quality and delicious. Starters are a little expensive, but on a Monday the whole bill was very reasonable. Mains (mussels and haddock) were tasty, both dishes on the large side. In efforts to maintain covid security, the rear doors were left open, which left me cold on a chilly evening. Knowing everything would have to be sanitised again if we moved, we stayed where we were, but the conservatory area is generally chilly. More
Just had a fantastic meal at The Paper Mills, from the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. We took our cockapoo Millie, and she was welcomed in just as friendly a manner as we were, which is a... lovely touch, the waitress took our drinks order and also asked if Millie would like a bowl of water. We ordered the duck breast and the burger, both of which were beautifully cooked and presented. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding and a cheese board, again well presented and very tasty. This was our first visit but most definitely will not be our last! Highly recommended. More
I’m sad to leave this review as I have eaten at this restaurant a few times in the last 20 years and always enjoyed it. This was my first time here in some years and we felt very let down by the service. Firstly, this... place isn’t cheap (my dish £18 for Chicken Supreme) and with the prices they charge you expect a service to compliment. We booked the table for 8 pm on a Friday night. At the point of booking it was not mentioned that the Chef went home at 9pm. Our mains came no problem and we took our time eating them and catching up. In that time we were asked by 3 different people how our meals were - the first one before any of us had even picked up our cutlery. Afterwards be were brought the desert menu – we were chatting and not really looking at the menu when one of the waitresses came up and asked if we were ready to order. We apologised and said sorry that we hadn’t looked yet could she come back in a couple of moments and she actually rolled her eyes! Another waitress came to take our order and told us (albeit nicely) that we should hurry up as the Chef was about to leave. We hadn’t had starters but if we had then we would have missed desert for sure! We wanted to enjoy our evening not be rushed into a one hour slot. The desert came – two of us had the sticky toffee pudding. Stone cold. Even the toffee sauce. We told a waiter who went in and got us some more (he said he had to do them himself as the chef had left) – they were only a bit warmer. The team (having started off over attentive) were nowhere to be seen after that. We waited a long time for anyone to come our way so we could ask for our bill. Nobody came so we walked through to the bar and asked the waiter who was sitting down for it. He brought it to the table in the bar but never came back for payment. I had to get up, walk over to where he was sat behind the bar and ask him for the card machine. He was polite but we were left far too long. The food here is very very nice. But, as I said, expensive which would be fine if the service was there to match. For goodness sake if somebody books a table for 8 tell them that the chef leaves at 9 and offer an earlier booking. And advise the waiting team to not roll their eyes or leave their customers having to hunt down their bill themselves! Maybe it was an off night but I won’t be going back here. More
We have eaten at the Paper Mills many times and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has prided itself on gastro-pub food and its historic setting, so it always felt a bit special. Our latest visit however has seen standards slip we feel. I initially opted for... crispy chicken Ceasar salad which came with an anchovy dressing. I'm not over keen on anchovies, don't think they particularly go with crispy chicken, so asked if I might have a plain dressing instead. I was told the whole salad actually had anchovies sprinkled amongst it. So, I opted instead for the salmon, fish of the day, Sunday lunch. I was rather perplexed when a Sunday roast did indeed arrive with my over cooked salmon sitting on top of roast parsnip, roast carrot, roast potatoes and a cold, soggy Yorkshire pudding that filled half the plate. I hadn't expected salmon would just be a substitute on the roast plate but that it would be served with appropriate accompaniments. I must admit, salmon and Yorkshire pudding are a new one on me. My husband's lamb however, was plentiful and tasty, but still accompanied by a soggy, luke-warm, plate-sized yorky. All the staff seemed very busy but service was quite slow. For a main course each, two pints of Ghost Ship and an orange juice and lemonade the bill was a touch over £45....the orange juice and lemonade MORE expensive than a pint! I want to support local businesses, but I must say we felt ripped off. We didn't have £45 worth of lunch in quantity or quality. More
We are new to the area and received such a great welcome in this pub, we had our very well behaved Beagle with us too, and they were so accomodating, they even gave her a treat! Lots of atmosphere with an open fire which was... a lovely sight to see. The food is just great, with some very tasty dishes and always served promptly with a smile. I would recommend this pub which is just across the road from the Haycock. More
Expensive and poor staples such as burger and fish and chips. Wet translucent fish and a mass of stogy batter. They seem to pride themselves on ‘beef dripping chips’ but they tasted fatty and stale. What tasted like cheap tinned peas. Cheap gristly burger which... we were told were homemade - I’d put money on this being untrue. Cheap fries. The other issue is that the rest of the menu is just fluff. Lots of ‘fussy’ food which looks like it’s been put together by an inexperienced chef. What happened to the wholesome classics and bistro dishes with high quality ingredients? When we raised our displeasure with a waitress she actually said ‘so do you want anything or not?!’ We we’re so stunned it took a couple of seconds to respond by which time she just walked off! Such a shame as it used to be so good. More
To read such a review in disappointing given we pride ourselves on the service and quality of food. The last review of a similar nature was found to be made up from a competitor and that disappoints us. Whilst not jumping to the same conclusions... More
Not as good as it used to be. Poor attention to detail. Sour & surly staff member ‘welcoming’ us. Prices have crept up and food reasonably average. Group of us not catered for particularly well so we under-ordered frankly, we could easily have doubled what... we spent but didn’t want to spend time in the venue any longer than necessary. Difficult to recommend More
Met our daughter here for Sunday lunch and enjoyed a great meal. We ordered the Tapas sharing starter, which had a nice selection of meats, cheese, prawns etc and all chose the roast beef for mains which was delicious, melt in the mouth, served with... roasted veg, potatoes, Yorkshire puds and separately cauliflower cheese. Although probably not needed we followed this with dessert, which was again very tasty and well presented. Being a pub as well there was a full bar to choose from with a choice of ales. 3 people with shared starter, 3 mains and desserts and drinks was £100. More
It used to be good, but now they're just happy to take your complaints and your money (I feel sorry for the waiting staff who have to take all the complaints). The confit duck leg was just a drumstick and not confit. The ink squid... cracker that comes with the trout was hard and inedible whilst the whole dish was bathed in oil and totally lacked any seasoning. No compensation excpet a complimentary drink (which I couldn't have as I was driving) was offered for a £70 meal. I won't ever come back and would advise everyone to avoid. More
Lunch today at The Paper Mills was nice, Roast fish of the day and roast Mushroom with feta and spinach, all served with roasted veg and a Yorkshire pudding. Veg was delicious and nicely cooked as was everything else really. Service was good, Gemma (getting... the name from the receipt) our waitress was pleasant and polite, we didn't have to wait long to have our order taken. The one thing that stopped the meal being so much better was that some of it wasn't really very warm. It wasn't cold, just not hot. In particular my broccoli was verging on being cold. Gemma did come and ask us if everything was OK after a few minutes and we said yes because it was 'OK' It's a difficult one because some would say we should have said its cold or complained in some way but it wasn't that bad at all. Just could have been hotter. The plates were NOT hot and I think that's probably the main reason. I know veg is difficult to keep hot and a hot plate would have helped I think. Perhaps one for the owners to take away form this if its read by them. The restaurant was nice, everything clean. We were in a conservatory and all the windows were open so good from a Covid perspective. I think we will go again but maybe we'll try some other places in Wansford first. More
We visited paper mills for Sunday lunch and was possibly the most tasteless roast beef I've eaten. And our child's lamb Sunday roast was uneatable. We have been here before and really enjoyed the food, but won't be coming again.
There may have been some staffing issues (some appeared new, untrained and dangerous). We were a party of six but it took three waiters to confirm our drinks orders and it still wasn’t quite right when they arrived. Waiter did a bit of adhoc juggling... with glasses and bottles which made us all duck. Still, we all saw the funny side. Food was quite average for the price and one of the starters simply wasn’t up to scratch. We paid part card part cash; the waiter took off our pile of notes to count it and that was the last we saw of anyone - no change was offered. Probably wouldn’t rush back here when there are better gastropubs in the area but it wasn’t the worst meal ever. More
Situated in the attractive village of Wansford next to the A1/A47 junction is The Paper Mill pub restaurant. We managed to locate a parking space on the road and walked in without a booking. We were seated in the conservatory at the rear and drink... orders taken by an extremely friendly and bubbly waitress. After a short time our lunch orders were taken, I had the roast beef loin and my wife had the pork belly which were both relatively good. I must admit they were a little on the expensive side, £18 and £17 respectively bit service and the atmosphere made it a very pleasant experience. The staff were as good as I have ever met in any pub and very helpful and chatty too. Our bill with a pint of guinness and a coke totalled £43. The cauliflower cheese was delicious and I particularly enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding. We will definitely return. Visited 10th April 2022. More
Such a disappointment, especially given the recent news of a new head chef having taken the helm a little while ago. Where do I begin? Cheap bent cutlery, glasses with cracks in them, wobbly chairs, safety notices taped to chairs indicating open doors should not... be used and what sounded like a sports bar at the front of the establishment as they had a football game on TV. The place doesn’t know if it’s a bar or a country pub and restaurant. The staff seemed untrained and the service was exceptionally chaotic. Most of the food was poor quality. Soup appeared like it was from a can (and not even a premium brand) and the bread was stale Croutons were actually whole slices of fried bread Side salads were limp and tasteless Pears in another salad seemed to be from a can instead of ‘poached’ as advertised Tomato and Mozzarella special had a mixture of tomatoes from some which were hard and nowhere near ripe to others than were starting to mush down, then right on top was a whole ball of undrained mozzarella on a starter! Burger was not cooked to a safe temperature for minced beef. More

Paper Mills Are Bribing Journal Editors as Retractions Soar
In its January 19th issue, Science reported on the increasingly aggressive and corrupt methods that paper mills are employing to get bogus research published in respected journals. You can listen to the Science podcast for an interview with the author of the article, Frederik Joelving from Retraction Watch .
Last year Nicholas Wise, a fluid dynamics researcher at Cambridge with an interest in scientific fraud, found Facebook postings by Olive Academic (a Chinese paper mill) offering substantial payments to journal editors to accept papers for publication. Further digging revealed payments of up to $20,000 and a list of more than 50 journal editors who had signed on. Wise and other experts in scientific fraud joined up with Science and Retraction Watch to investigate if this was an isolated incident or more widespread. They found similar activity by several other paper mills and more than 30 editors of reputable journals who were complicit. Publishers like Elsevier and Taylor and Francis say they are under siege, admitting that their journal editors are regularly approached with bribes from paper mills.
Special editions of journals were found to be most vulnerable to these scams because they are often edited by individuals or teams separate from the regular editorial boards. The investigation found that paper mills will at times engineer entire special issues themselves. “The latest generation papermill, they’re like the entire production line” (Joelving, 2024). Open access special issues can generate large profits for publishers based on the fees collected from authors, sometimes via paper mills. Wiley, Elsevier and other well known publishers have had regular journal editors involved in these special issue scams.
As a result of the investigation Hindawi and its parent company Wiley pulled thousands of papers in special issues due to compromised peer review and Wiley announced in December that the Hindawi brand would be suspended. The Hindawi retracted papers had ties to Tamjeed Publishing that acted as a broker between paper mills and multiple editors.
The need to publish to advance in certain professions becomes especially problematic in places where students or young professionals cannot easily attain the training or resources to do research that is publishable. This creates the market for paper mills. More than half of Chinese medical residents surveyed in a preprint referred to in the Science story said they had engaged in research misconduct such as buying papers or fabricating results. The Financial Times reported last year on how widespread the problem is in China and how it “threatens to overwhelm the editorial processes of a significant number of journals.”(Olcott and Smith, 2023)
It’s not just a problem in China. India, Russia, a number of ex-Soviet countries and Saudi Arabia are also common sources of paper mills engaging in these practices. There is concern that papers coming from these countries will start to draw extra scrutiny, creating potential inequities for researchers from them.
Though there is now increased awareness and a desire by reputable publishers to crack down on fraud, it is difficult and time consuming to do. The exponential growth of peer review fraud and sham papers make it all but impossible to ferret out all the publications that should be retracted. An analysis by Nature late last year concluded that over 10,000 articles were retracted in 2023 with retractions rising at a rate that far exceeds the growth of scientific papers. And they speculate it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Retraction Watch alerts of retracted articles are available for Himmelfarb Library users when searching Health Information @ Himmelfarb , the library catalog, and when using the LibKey Nomad browser extension or BrowZine to connect to full-text. Read more about the service .

Title: morse index stability for yang-mills connections.
Abstract: We prove stability results of the Morse index plus nullity of Yang-Mills connections in dimension 4 under weak convergence. Precisely we establish that the sum of the Morse indices and the nullity of a bounded sequence of Yang-Mills connections is asymptotically bounded above by the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the weak limit and the bubbles while the Morse indices are asymptotically bounded below by the sum of the Morse index of the weak limit and the bubbles.

Both individuals and organizations that work with arXivLabs have embraced and accepted our values of openness, community, excellence, and user data privacy. arXiv is committed to these values and only works with partners that adhere to them.
