Exemplification essays allow scholars to validate a specific argument. In this case, the primary goal for writing an exemplification paper is to use a real-life example to prove that a particular point remains valid. Moreover, failure to make a suitable selection for essay topics leads to weaker papers that may discourage the target audience from reading through. Then, prudent learners begin the process of selecting a topic by brainstorming ideas, while this article includes many examples of exemplification essay topics. In turn, actual papers must contain an introduction that catches the reader’s attention. Besides, the body section should have excellent and compelling examples to support a thesis statement, while the conclusion should bring papers to a logical closure.

General Guidelines on Exemplification Essay Topics

An exemplification essay topic refers to academic writing that relies on specific and vivid examples to describe, persuade, explain, and exemplify a general idea. Basically, exemplification essay topics present reliable and robust substantiation and evidence to support the writer’s main argument. Moreover, exemplification papers prove some arguments and contain clear examples to support a thesis statement. Then, appropriate illustrations help to create the reader’s interest. Also, by supplying specific examples, one adds information related to “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” and “how” questions. In turn, such details help to elaborate on the main idea presented in a paragraph or an essay. Although exemplification works prove some arguments, one must use good examples to relate to a topic to support central perspectives logically.

Types of Exemplifications

Students can write two types of exemplification essays to support their central arguments. For example, the first type uses multiple examples to support a central argument. In this case, writers use several illustrations to prove the main idea. Also, this type allows learners to use related examples to verify the validity of a specific argument. Then, the second type of exemplification essay is an extended example, enabling authors to use one significant example but examine all the related finer details. In turn, scholars focus on elucidating a specific model to communicate the leading case in point.

Topic Types of Exemplification Papers

Learners can use different topics for multiple and extended exemplification essays. Basically, the primary aim in both cases is to ensure that readers accept a specific argument or perspective. Hence, particular examples of topics for two types of exemplification essays are:

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Construct an Exemplification Essay Topic

Exemplification essay topics focus on providing a suitable explanation for the target audience. Basically, students must pay attention when creating a relevant topic for an exemplification paper. In this case, the primary goal that a scholar must achieve when choosing a theme is to present a compelling argument that may motivate readers to accept a specific point of view. Hence, the basic steps that one should follow in choosing or creating a suitable exemplification essay topic are:

Step 1: Brainstorming

The first step in creating a topic for an exemplification essay is brainstorming relevant ideas. For instance, scholars must identify a concept that relates to an emerging issue. In this case, brainstorming allows students to generate unique and original topics for their essays or research papers. Moreover, prudent learners focus on raising many points related to their papers. Eventually, writers evaluate presented ideas to identify the most compelling concepts. Therefore, one should begin by brainstorming to identify the most appropriate title for an essay.

Step 2: Researching

Scholars have a mandate to research a topic identified to gather relevant examples. In particular, exemplification papers must have several general measures to support the intended point of view. Basically, students should take time to gather applicable sources to support their topics. For example, some of the credible sources that may help with getting necessary evidence include journal articles, books, and credible websites. As a rule, all the examples identified must support an exemplification topic directly. In turn, writers need to ensure that illustrations or supporting ideas relate to concepts obtained from reliable sources.

Step 3: Drafting a Title

Students must draft a suitable topic for an exemplification essay. Basically, the evidence gathered helps one to select the best idea from those recorded in the first step. In this case, one should engage in a critical evaluation process that can lead to the identification of the most compelling topic for a paper. As a rule, one should choose a subject supported by many and relevant examples. In turn, prudent learners draft several titles, from which they select the most compelling one. Besides, writers should not limit themselves to related ideas. Instead, authors should create diverse topics.

Step 4: Revising a Drafted Topic

Learners should revise their drafted topics to ensure that they contain a single idea. Basically, a good case for an exemplification work must be independent. In this case, a reader must understand the writer’s intended message by reading the title of a topic. Moreover, compelling topics must be short and precise, meaning that the audience should quickly grasp the intended meaning. In turn, one should ensure that discussed issues catch the reader’s attention. Besides, most individuals focus on reading exciting papers.

Step 5: Selecting a Suitable Topic

Authors should select the most compelling topic from the list of themes developed in the previous step. For example, writers should reread titles several times to identify the most effective one. In other instances, writers request their peers to evaluate proposed topics and identify the strongest ones. Moreover, the selection process forms the foundation for writing an outstanding essay. As a rule, the selected case should contain a debatable point. In turn, exemplification essay topics require writers to engage in a debate that proves the validity of a specific point or issue. Besides, learners must ensure that the topic identification process leads to a reasonable subject.

Skeleton for an Exemplification Essay Topic

Writers can rely on a specific format to develop an exemplification essay topic. For instance, a suitable topic must contain a subject and debatable consequences. As a rule, the matter may be an individual, government policy, a trending issue, or any other thing that leads to specific outcomes. In turn, this basic structure allows one to use viable examples to support a particular claim for a study. Hence, a general format that an exemplification essay topic must follow is:

  • Subject, a debatable outcome

One may alter this structure based on a topic or discipline. For instance, students may decide to begin with uncertain outcomes followed by a specific subject. In turn, such a general format would appear as:

  • A debatable result, subject

Writers alter a topic skeleton to reduce monotony when writing their essays. Basically, diversified topics help to capture the reader’s attention. Also, learners need to ensure that the title of multiple topics for exemplification papers contains a narrow subject. However, extended themes for exemplification essays should have a broad topic that may lead to adequate subject analysis. In turn, this difference determines the nature of examples that one may use to support a central argument.

Template for Exemplification Essays

Topics for an exemplification essay should be short, clear, and independent. Basically, a suitable topic should contain between eight and twelve words. In turn, extended versions of such themes may sound vague and appear unprofessional.

2. Introduction

The introduction should begin with a catchphrase that attracts the reader’s attention. In this case, writers should include the main points that allow readers to gain adequate background information. Besides, this section must end with a thesis statement that shows the writer’s argument.

A. 1st Body Paragraph

The body section should begin with a paragraph that supports a thesis statement. In particular, writers must begin every body paragraph with a topic sentence followed by compelling examples. Moreover, the last sentence in a paragraph should summarize the main ideas and provide a transition to the next paragraph.

B. 2nd Body Paragraph

The second paragraph should contain a counterargument that opposes a thesis statement. As a rule, one should provide real-life examples that support a counterargument. Besides, writers should include explanations that can help readers to understand the intended message of this counterargument.

C. 3rd Body Paragraph

The third paragraph should refute a counterargument and show that a thesis statement holds. For example, writers must show the counterargument’s major weakness. In turn, this approach allows readers to make a suitable judgment about the main subject. Besides, this paragraph must help readers to change their minds and accept a thesis argument as a valid statement.

4. Conclusion

Exemplification essays must end with a summative paragraph. In this case, the last passage should bring a paper into a logical closure that allows readers to connect body paragraphs in a clear picture. Also, one should summarize the main points and restate a thesis statement.

Exemplification essay topics present specific arguments but require one to use real-life examples to support the central claim. In this case, students should validate central perspectives by using good examples that relate to the topic logically. Then, two types of exemplification papers should include multiple and extended models of themes. For multiple these, one should use several real-life cases to support a thesis. Otherwise, authors should break a single instance into relevant subtopics to help the essay’s central point. Hence, key tips that students must remember when writing exemplification papers are:

  • Rely on brainstorming, drafting, and revision processes when developing a suitable title for an exemplification essay.
  • Write an introduction that supports a topic directly.
  • Include a supporting argument, counterclaim, and refutation.
  • Convince the target audience to accept the main argument as acceptable.
  • Bring the work to a suitable closure.
  • Provide real-life examples to support the central argument.

It is similar to argumentative and persuasive essays, but the number of examples is its main distinguishing feature. If you learn how to illustrate your words practically, your communication and persuasion skills will be enhanced, which is something most people benefit from. That is why college professors give these tasks, but once again, everything goes back to the topic. Why it is relevant and how to select it.

Where to Find Topics for Exemplification Essays?

Looking for topics means that you have to make sense of what you like and of whether you’re going to be able to explore this choice academically. For following this goal, there are major 4 tips all students should remember. Here’s what they include.

  • Passion matters . Select a topic that you would enjoy writing about. It could be from any genre and category — almost anything could be made into an academic assignment. If you watch the news and grumble your protests, turn it into exciting exploration. If you read a book and want to discuss it, use it as fuel. Topics for example essays are endless, so focus on your preferences and choose whichever you enjoy more. The more you have to say about it, the better.
  • Think about examples.  When you get an outline of an idea, think about it with more depth. Since we’re talking about an exemplification paper, you will obviously need to support your views with examples, so try coming up with them now. Can you think of a lot? The more, the better. If your choices seem limited and you lose track after the first one or two instances. Then you should consider looking for other exemplification topics — maybe you’ll have more luck with them.
  • Find sources.  Examples alone won’t be enough. This is something you should already understand if you’ve written at least several academic papers for college. So, after settling on a theme and thinking of what angle you’ll be exploring it from, look for articles or books that you could use for support. Are they credible? Were they created within the last 5 or 7 years? Once you’ve accumulated a collection of examples and sources, you can proceed.
  • Solidify your choice.  After you covered the steps above, consider contacting your professor with an update. Most of them will appreciate this gesture, and it’ll also be extremely helpful to you as well. You’ll learn whether your topic is appropriate and if your sources are good, so if there are any mistakes, you’ll have an opportunity to correct them.

120 Exemplification Essay Topics

Essay writing has many different forms. However, an exemplification essay is one of the most common forms of essay writing that most students will have to do throughout their academic journey.

An exemplification essay is a type of argumentative essay that requires specific examples and evidence to support one’s argument. An exemplification essay aims to make it clear and easy for the reader to understand what you are arguing by using specific details and examples.

To write a strong exemplification essay, it is important to choose relevant and informative examples. Additionally, it is essential to make sure that your examples are well-organized and clearly presented.

What’s the Difference Between an Argumentative Essay and an Exemplification Essay?

While both the argumentative and exemplification essays are designed to present a thesis and provide supporting evidence, there are some key differences between the two.

First of all, an argumentative essay tends to be more abstract than an exemplification essay, making it harder for readers to fully grasp what you’re saying without the proper examples.

Secondly, an argumentative essay is written in a negotiable tone, while an exemplification essay is written in a firm tone.

Furthermore, the topic for an exemplification essay should always have plenty of definable and concrete facts and terms that can back up the overall argument the writer is trying to make. However, an argumentative essay doesn’t need to have these same restrictive parameters; in fact, it can explore a wide range of topics so long as the main argument is well-supported by ideas, principles, or general information.

While both argumentative and exemplification essays are important pieces of writing, an exemplification essay is a more straightforward way to argue your point using specific evidence.

How to Write an Exemplification Essay

When it comes to the writing process for an exemplification essay, it’s important to remember that this particular essay style is all about providing specific examples to illustrate your point.

With that in mind, there are a few key steps that you can take to make sure your essay flows smoothly and effectively:

  • Choose a topic that you feel comfortable writing about. It’s essential to pick a topic that is broad enough to find plenty of credible and concrete examples but narrow enough to limit what you are writing about.

Pro Tip: Make sure to look for specific evidence rather than generalities or assumptions. It’s easy to fall back on common phrases and rhetorical statements, but it is much more effective to use tangible facts directly related to your argument.

  • Outline your essay before you start writing. This will help to ensure that your essay has a clear and logical structure. Additionally, by outlining your essay, you can ensure that all of your points are properly addressed and that your argument is easy to follow.
  • Start with a strong introduction that grabs the reader’s attention and introduces your topic. Then, be sure to define any key terms the reader will need and end your introduction with a strong thesis.

Pro Tip: Don’t be vague in your exemplification essay thesis. Instead of saying, “Pollution is bad for the environment,” try saying, “The release of harmful chemicals into the environment is one of the major causes of water pollution. This essay will explore those specific chemicals and the impact they have already had to date.”

  • Develop your body paragraphs by providing specific examples that support your thesis. Be sure to use clear and concise language, and make sure each example is directly related to your overall argument.

Pro Tip: Use one example per body paragraph. Generally, a basic exemplification essay will contain a minimum of 3 body paragraphs, but you may need more if your topic is particularly complex.

  • Write a strong conclusion that reiterates your thesis and provides a final thought on the topic.

Pro Tip: Make sure your conclusion wraps up all of the loose ends in your essay and doesn’t introduce any new information or arguments.

By following these basic steps, you can create an exemplification essay that effectively argues your point using concrete evidence.

In addition to these key steps to writing an exemplification essay, you must also cite all of the sources used throughout the text. This will not only add credibility to your writing and research but allow others to fact-check your work if they want to look for more information on the topic.

If you have the writing skills but lack the creativity to come up with a detailed topic that has plenty of sources, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with this list of 120 exemplification essay topics perfect for any level of education.

Exemplification Essay How-to Writing Guide

exemplification essay topics for college students

Writing an exemplification essay offers a unique opportunity to showcase your ability to provide concrete examples that support your arguments. As a genre of academic writing, exemplification essays require a meticulous balance of explanation and illustration, demanding a thorough understanding of the chosen topic and the art of persuasion.

In this article, we will explore the essential steps and strategies on how to write an exemplification essay, guiding you through selecting appropriate examples, organizing your ideas effectively, and, ultimately, presenting a coherent and persuasive argument.

What Is a Exemplification Essay?

An exemplification essay is a type of academic writing that employs specific examples to illustrate and support a thesis statement or main argument. Unlike other types of essays that rely heavily on theoretical concepts or abstract reasoning, exemplification essays require concrete evidence in the form of examples, anecdotes, statistics, or case studies to validate the central claim. These examples serve as the backbone of the essay, providing clarity, credibility, and depth to the writer's assertions. If you don’t have time to cope with this assignment, use our essay writing service to save time and deliver a classy paper.

How to Write an Exemplification Essay in 10 Steps

Following these steps, you can effectively produce an exemplification essay that persuasively communicates your argument using concrete examples and evidence.

Step 1 – Select a Topic

When choosing a topic for your exemplification essay, consider subjects that you are passionate about or have a strong understanding of. Additionally, ensure that the topic is sufficiently narrow to allow for in-depth exploration within the confines of your essay. Choose exemplification essay examples of topics that are current, controversial, or have multiple perspectives that often make for compelling narratives. Take time to brainstorm and research potential topics before making your final selection. Consult an expert paper writer if you can’t pick a good topic.

Step 2 – Write a Thesis Statement

Your thesis statement is the central point around which your essay revolves. It should clearly articulate your stance on the topic and provide a roadmap for the reader to understand the direction of your argument. A well-crafted thesis statement is specific, arguable, and supported by the examples you plan to present in your essay. Use our custom essay writing service if you need help with a thesis.

Step 3 – Brainstorm Examples

Once you have chosen your topic and formulated your thesis statement, brainstorm various examples that illustrate and support your argument. Consider real-life experiences, historical events, scientific studies, literary works, or current events that align with your thesis. Aim for diversity in your examples to provide a comprehensive and compelling case for your argument.

Step 4 – Carry Out Research

Conduct thorough research to gather relevant information and evidence to support your examples. Utilize various sources, including academic journals, books, reputable websites, and primary sources. Evaluate the credibility and reliability of each source to ensure that the evidence you present is accurate and trustworthy.

Step 5 – Draw up an Outline

Creating an exemplification essay outline is crucial in organizing your ideas and writing your essay effectively. Divide your essay into introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, and outline the main points and examples you plan to cover in each section. A well-organized outline will help you maintain focus and coherence throughout the writing process. If you also have a descriptive essay due soon, check out a similar guide on this type of composition.

Step 6 – Start with an Introduction

The introduction sets the tone for your essay and grabs the reader's attention. Start with a compelling hook, such as a provocative question, an anecdote, or a startling statistic, to draw the reader in. Provide some background information on the topic to contextualize your argument and end with a clear thesis statement that previews the main points of your essay.

Step 7 – Work on Body Paragraphs

Each body paragraph of exemplification essays should focus on a single example or aspect of your argument and provide detailed analysis and evidence to support it. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that clearly states the main point or example you will discuss. Then, present your example and analyze its relevance to your thesis statement, providing specific details and evidence to strengthen your argument.

Step 8 – Integrate Examples

When introducing examples in your essay, provide sufficient context and background information to ensure the reader understands their significance. Clearly explain how each example supports your thesis and relates to the overall argument of your essay. Use transitions and logical connections to integrate your examples into the flow of your argument smoothly.

Step 9 – Address Counterarguments

Acknowledging and addressing potential counterarguments strengthens your essay by demonstrating critical thinking and awareness of opposing viewpoints. Anticipate objections to your argument and provide evidence and reasoning to refute them. Acknowledging counterarguments shows that you have considered alternative perspectives and strengthens the credibility of your argument.

Step 10 – Finish with a Conclusion

In the conclusion, restate your thesis statement and summarize your essay's main points and examples. Emphasize the significance of your argument and its broader implications, leaving the reader with a final thought or call to action. Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion, but instead, reinforce the key points and leave a lasting impression on the reader. Exemplification Essay

Introduction

An exemplification essay is a type of essay that uses specific examples to support a generalization or an argument. The examples used in an exemplification essay help to clarify, explain, and prove a point. In this guide, we will discuss the key elements of an exemplification essay and provide examples to help you understand how to write one.

What is an Exemplification Essay?

An exemplification essay is a type of argumentative essay that uses examples to support a thesis statement. The purpose of an exemplification essay is to prove a point through the use of examples. The examples used in an exemplification essay should be relevant, specific, and convincing. An exemplification essay is different from other types of essays because it uses concrete examples to support a point rather than relying on generalizations or opinions.

How to Write an Exemplification Essay?

An exemplification essay follows the same basic structure as other types of essays. The essay should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion . However, the body of an exemplification essay is where the examples are presented and analyzed in detail.

Choose a Topic

The first step in writing an exemplification essay is to choose a topic. The topic should be something that you are familiar with and have a strong opinion about. You should also choose a topic that is narrow enough to be covered in a single essay. For example, if you want to write about the benefits of exercise, you should focus on a specific aspect of exercise such as weight loss or stress reduction.

Develop a Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is the main point of your essay. It should be a clear and concise statement that summarizes the argument you are making. The thesis statement should also be specific and focused on the topic you have chosen. For example, if you are writing about the benefits of exercise, your thesis statement could be: "Regular exercise can lead to weight loss, improved mental health, and increased energy levels."

Gather Examples

The next step is to gather examples that support your thesis statement. These examples should be specific, relevant, and persuasive. You can use a variety of sources to gather examples, including personal experiences, research studies, and statistics. For example, if you are writing about the benefits of exercise, you could use examples such as personal stories of weight loss success, studies that show the correlation between exercise and improved mental health, and statistics that show the benefits of exercise on energy levels.

Organize your Essay

Once you have gathered your examples, you need to organize your essay. The body of your essay should be divided into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific example. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph. You should also use transition words and phrases to link the paragraphs together and create a logical flow.

Write the Introduction

The introduction of your exemplification essay should grab the reader's attention and provide background information about the topic. It should also include your thesis statement, which summarizes the argument you are making. You can use a variety of techniques to grab the reader's attention, such as asking a question, using a quote, or providing a startling statistic.

Write the Body

The body of your essay should present your examples and analyze them in detail. Each paragraph should focus on a specific example and provide evidence to support your argument. You should also use transition words and phrases to link the paragraphs together and create a logical flow. Make sure to use specific examples that are relevant to your thesis statement.

In fact, finding excellent exemplification essay topics can bring you a lot of benefits.

👉 How to Choose a Persuasive Essay Topic for College?

The main secret of the successful persuasive essay is a compelling topic. Therefore, when choosing the right persuasive topic, follow these few simple pieces of advice:

  • Re-read the assignment . The task that you’ve received from your tutor can be of great assistance. You just have to read it correctly. Unfortunately, college students tend to underestimate the power of the question. Don’t make this mistake. Read your assignment carefully because it can provide clues on the topic to look for.
  • Brainstorm ideas. Before writing any paper, college students have to research. It will ensure the argumentative part of the persuasive essay. To understand what to examine, have an ideation session, and consider a variety of ideas. Picking the most appropriate one, you’ll see where to start your research. Try to find as many topics as you can. Free college essays collection is a good place to check out as a part of your session. You’ll be able to see what topics are already covered, and what you can expand upon. It will make your investigation and writing processes easier!
  • Don’t pick an idea if it’s too broad . You may think that in this case, you’ll have plenty of things to argue about. Well, maybe a bit too many. In your essay, you should cover an entire topic so that it sounds convincing. When the idea is too broad, you can’t fit every argument in one paper. So, specify your title. For instance, you want to persuade your readers to stay healthy. Then don’t investigate all the aspects of maintaining health. Focus on one specific issue. For example, explore the positive influence of sport on the general health condition of a human being.
  • Ensure that you have credible sources. In some colleges, even the smallest essays may require a list of references. Thus, make sure you have materials to research and later list as your sources. Remember: Good persuasive paper topics for college have to offer a wide variety of sources to investigate. So, if you are not confident in your materials, better change the title. It will prevent you from a lack of evidence to support your arguments.
  • Choose a topic of personal interest. We’re not compelling you to write something that you enjoy when it contradicts the assignment. But try to select an idea that doesn’t bore you from reading it out loud. It is always more pleasurable to write on a topic you are passionate about. Don’t miss your chance to make turn your essay writing process into an exciting activity.
  • Select something you have an opinion about, but open to debate. Your tutors can disagree with your position. Nevertheless, it is not a reason to give up. It’s the right time to show your critical thinking skills. State your position clearly and provide convincing arguments to support it. Show your readers that you can change your position if you see some compelling data. It can give you some extra credit. The best persuasion topics for college create an environment for debates and discussions.
  • Be unique! In colleges, the amount of papers done daily is enormous. Don’t make your professors read about the importance of waste sorting, for example, yet again. The topic of environmental protection is undoubtedly extremely significant. However: It is way too overused. The professors are tired of reading essays on the same issues again and again. Surprise them and stand out.

Finding an original topic for a persuasive essay is tricky.

160 Good Argumentative Essay Topics for Students in 2024

April 3, 2024

The skill of writing an excellent argumentative essay is a crucial one for every high school or college student to master. In sum, argumentative essays teach students how to organize their thoughts logically and present them in a convincing way. This skill is helpful not only for those pursuing degrees in law , international relations , or public policy , but for any student who wishes to develop their critical thinking faculties. In this article, we’ll cover what makes a good argument essay and offer several argumentative essay topics for high school and college students. Let’s begin!

What is an Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay is an essay that uses research to present a reasoned argument on a particular subject . As with the persuasive essay , the purpose of an argumentative essay is to sway the reader to the writer’s position. However, a strong persuasive essay makes its point through diligent research and emotion while a strong argumentative essay should be based solely on facts, not feelings.

Moreover, each fact should be supported by clear evidence from credible sources . Furthermore, a good argumentative essay will have an easy-to-follow structure. When organizing your argumentative essay, use this format as a guide:

  • Introduction
  • Supporting body paragraphs
  • Paragraph(s) addressing common counterarguments

Argumentative Essay Format

In the introduction , the writer presents their position and thesis statement —a sentence that summarizes the paper’s main points. The body paragraphs then draw upon supporting evidence to back up this initial statement, with each paragraph focusing on its own point. The length of your paper will determine the amount of examples you need. In general, you’ll likely need at least two to three. Additionally, your examples should be as detailed as possible, citing specific research, case studies, statistics, or anecdotes.

In the counterargument paragraph , the writer acknowledges and refutes opposing viewpoints. Finally, in the conclusion , the writer restates the main argument made in the thesis statement and summarizes the points of the essay. Additionally, the conclusion may offer a final proposal to persuade the reader of the essay’s position.

How to Write an Effective Argumentative Essay, Step by Step

  • Choose your topic. Use the list below to help you pick a topic. Ideally, a good argumentative essay topic will be meaningful to you—writing is always stronger when you are interested in the subject matter. In addition, the topic should be complex with plenty of “pro” and “con” arguments. Avoid choosing a topic that is either widely accepted as fact or too narrow. For example, “Is the earth round?” would not be a solid choice.
  • Research. Use the library, the web, and any other resources to gather information about your argumentative essay topic. Research widely but smartly. As you go, take organized notes, marking the source of every quote and where it may fit in the scheme of your larger essay. Moreover, remember to look for (and research) possible counterarguments.
  • Outline . Using the argument essay format above, create an outline for your essay. Then, brainstorm a thesis statement covering your argument’s main points, and begin to put your examples in order, focusing on logical flow. It’s often best to place your strongest example last.
  • Write . Draw on your research and outline to create a first draft. Remember, your first draft doesn’t need to be perfect. (As Voltaire says, “Perfect is the enemy of good.”) Accordingly, just focus on getting the words down on paper.
  • Does my thesis statement need to be adjusted?
  • Which examples feel strongest? Weakest?
  • Do the transitions flow smoothly?
  • Do I have a strong opening paragraph?
  • Does the conclusion reinforce my argument?

Tips for Revising an Argument Essay

Evaluating your own work can be difficult, so you might consider the following strategies:

  • Read your work aloud to yourself.
  • Record yourself reading your paper, and listen to the recording.
  • Reverse outline your paper. Firstly, next to each paragraph, write a short summary of that paragraph’s main points/idea. Then, read through your reverse outline. Does it have a logical flow? If not, where should you adjust?
  • Print out your paper and cut it into paragraphs. What happens when you rearrange the paragraphs?

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

An illustration of a high school student with blue hair, dreaming of what to write in their college essay.

By Nell Freudenberger

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

Nell Freudenberger’s novel “The Limits” was published by Knopf last month. She volunteers through the PEN America Writers in the Schools program.

How to Choose an Expository Essay Topic?

The importance of an interesting essay topic can not be overlooked. While reading an essay, it is the first thing that a reader comes across. With this, they would decide whether to continue reading or not.

Deciding on the topic for your writing piece can be challenging. Students often find themselves with writer’s block and cannot think of creative ideas for their essays.

Follow the steps given below to come up with an engaging expository essay topic.

  • Brainstorm ideas and make a list -  Brainstorming is a great way to come up with a topic. Make a list of all the ideas that interest you and your audience. At this point, you do not have to gather only good ideas.
  • Evaluate the topic -  After preparing a list of ideas, analyze which topic is appropriate. For writing an expository essay, make sure that the topic you choose can be explained in detail.
  • Narrow down the topic’s focus -  Once you have chosen a topic, focus on specific aspects. Broad topics will make it difficult for the writer to explain and support the argument.
  • Check for sources -  The last but most important step is to check for credible sources of information for your selected topic. Here, the writer needs strong supporting evidence to explain the topic in detail.

The introduction paragraph should be well written and provides a defined thesis statement. Then comes the body paragraphs that present all the explanations and descriptions of the topic. However, make sure to keep the body of your essay informative and organized.

Conclude your essay with strong closing lines to leave a lasting impression on the readers.
