Essays About The Internet: Top 5 Examples and Prompts

Are you writing essays about the internet? Then, read our guide, including interesting essay examples and writing prompts to get you started.

The internet is a vast network of billions of computers connecting people virtually worldwide. When you connect to the internet or go online, you can access loads of information and communicate with people from millions of miles away.

The internet has presented groundbreaking benefits to society, such as global, real-time communication, more accessible access to information, and more source of leisure. However, when in the wrong hands, the internet can be a dangerous neighborhood that bustles with criminal opportunities for thieves, stalkers, and murderers.

For inspiration in writing an article about the internet, read our round-up of thought-provoking essay examples and prompts.

1. Forty Years Of The Internet: How The World Changed Forever by Oliver Burkeman

2. who owns the internet by elizabeth kolbert, 3. a nation of echo chambers: how the internet closed off the world by will leitch, 4. the rise of memes in the internet world by lennlee keep, 5. how to fight lies, tricks and chaos online by adi robertson, 10 writing prompts on essays about the internet, 1. the internet’s benefits to students, 2. dangers of the internet on the youth, 3. how the internet changed how we date, 4. how the internet revolutionized business, 5. safeguarding your privacy online, 6. effects of internet slang on literacy, 7. are bloggers replacing journalists, 8. the internet of things, 9. metaverse: the future of the internet, 10. creating communities online.

“It’s impossible to say for certain when the internet began, mainly because nobody can agree on what, precisely, the internet is. (This is only partly a philosophical question: it is also a matter of egos since several of the people who made key contributions are anxious to claim the credit.”

Burkeman treads the history of the internet through the lens of those who claim to have contributed to its development and arrival on the tech scene. His nostalgic journey interestingly shows how the internet emerged glacially slow, heading toward the dotcom boom not until decades after a successful computer communication experiment initially intended to establish US defense. You might also be interested in these essays about computers .

“The Internet revolution has, indeed, sent heads rolling, as legions of bookstore owners, music critics, and cirrhotic editors can attest. Instead of becoming more egalitarian, the country has become less so: the gap between America’s rich and poor grows ever wider.”

Once envisioned to democratize power to the people, the Internet disappoints as it continues to concentrate power on a few, deepening inequality with graver concerns, such as piracy and fake news.

“We now only have to interact with people who agree with us; if I use Twitter as my primary news source, as so many people do, I can carefully curate my feed to exclude anyone who disagrees with me about anything. (And if someone who slips in there who does, I can call them a horrible person.).”

The essay laments how the internet has isolated us into our echo chambers, leaving our beliefs unchallenged and stripped of world-proven facts on matters as evident as vaccination. Furthermore, because we addictively feed into the positive validation of people who share our opinions, it becomes easy to demonize those who don’t. As such, our society deals with more conspiracy theory believers and spreaders.

“The internet is still in some ways the Wild West, and putting your meme and your art out in the world requires a certain amount of faith in humanity, diligence and maybe a good rights attorney on retainer.”

An integral part of social media, memes may not mean what we know them to be in the internet age. Instead, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins contends that memes are cultural ideas and customs passed on if worthy of being “meme”-icked. If we go by this definition, memes could date back to early civilizations and even be found in the animal kingdom.

“This kind of viral half-truth is part of the fabric of today’s internet, and the kind of anger it inspired has been turned into a dangerous commodity. It’s cynically exploited by businesses for ad-supported “fake news,” by scammers raising money online, and by authoritarian governments to spread hate and fear.”

The widespread falsehoods being peddled over the internet requires netizens’ heightened vigilance. But Robertson recognizes the struggle always to be vigilant, drawing up a list of practical techniques everyone can use to combat fake news.

Internet Essay

Social interaction and the internet essay.

Below is an  Internet essay  connected to social interaction.

The IELTS test usually focuses on topical issues, and this certainly falls into this category as you have probably seen this issue discussed on TV and online.

Internet and Social Interaction

You have to discuss if you think that the Internet is damaging social interaction.

The question also mentions the matter of the Internet opening up communication world-wide, so you should also discuss this in your answer.

Always look at the question carefully and  underline the key points  made in the prompt to ensure you do not miss anything.

Of course you should always do a quick plan for your internet essay, as with any essay, before you start to write.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

According to a recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time they spend with real human beings. Some people say that instead of seeing the Internet as a way of opening up new communication possibilities world- wide, we should be concerned about the effect this is having on social interaction.

How far do you agree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Internet Essay - Model Answer

It is evident that, at present, people are spending a considerable amount of time on the Internet, and thus spending less time with real people. I strongly agree that although this use of the Internet has greatly increased the level of communication available, it has also had detrimental effects on the amount and type of social interaction that takes place.

The benefits of the Internet in terms of increased communication are clear, with people connected across the globe. In the past, communication was only possible by phone or mail, which entailed time and expense. It also usually meant just keeping in contact with those people already known to you. With the internet, this has changed dramatically. Email and social networking sites such as Facebook and MSN have created online communities that are global in scale, and they have fostered communication between people and countries that we would not have thought possible in the not too distant past.

That said, there is no doubt in my mind that this has had negative impacts on social interaction. People, especially the younger generation, spend hours of their time online, chatting and on forums. Although this can be beneficial, it is certainly not the same as real interaction with human beings and does not involve the same skills. It is important that children have and maintain real friendships in order to develop their own interpersonal skills. Not only this, it can also have negative effects on local communities if people are spending most of their time communicating online and not mixing in their neighbourhoods, and possibly lead to feelings of isolation for those individuals who do not have a ‘real’ person to turn to in times of need.

To conclude, I believe that the internet has undoubtedly been beneficial, but there are good reasons to be concerned about social interaction in our societies. It is therefore important that we maintain a balance between our online life and our contact with real human beings.

IELTS essay sample: The advantages and disadvantages of the internet

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published February 20, 2016 · Updated April 27, 2023

Essay topic

The Internet has brought many changes into our day to day life. Nowadays we can do things such as mailing, contacting, banking and communication much faster. Is this a positive or negative development?

Sample essay

The internet has revolutionized our lives. It has changed the way we connect with our friends and family. It has changed the way we access information and buy things. It has enabled people to work from their home. In my opinion, the internet has more positive impacts than negative impacts on our lives.

The internet has made information accessible to everyone. Much of the content on the internet is free. Anyone who has an internet connection can access it from any part of the world. Having an internet connection is a bit like having access to all the books in the world. In my opinion, this is the biggest advantage of the internet. Because of it, people can now get medical and financial advice online. Students can prepare for their tests online.

Internet also allows us to buy and sell things online from the comfort of our home. Online transactions save time and money. Another advantage of the internet is its ability to facilitate communication. Thanks to technologies such as video conferencing, people living in different parts of the world can now participate in online conferences at the same time. This eliminates the need for them to travel to another country just for the sake of attending a conference.

The internet has its fair share of disadvantages too. Plenty of obscene and offensive content is available online. While surfing the internet, children might stumble upon this content accidentally. In recent times, anti-social elements have started using the internet to recruit youngsters. This has become a major threat to the security of nations.

To conclude, the internet has both positive and negative impacts; however, in my opinion the positives outweigh the negatives. It has connected the world and made opportunities available to everyone. In fact, today, it is impossible for us to imagine a life without the internet.

The Internet, a sprawling network of interconnected devices and data, has redefined how humanity interacts, learns, and progresses. Born from ARPANET in the 1960s, it evolved into an indispensable tool that facilitates communication, access to information, and commerce. With the World Wide Web’s emergence, it transcended mere data exchange, becoming a repository of knowledge, entertainment, and opportunities. However, its influence brings both benefits and challenges, from online education to cybersecurity threats. The Internet is a testament to human ingenuity and its potential to shape our connected future.

The Internet, a technological marvel born from the minds of visionaries, has grown into a global phenomenon that touches every facet of our lives. Its roots trace back to ARPANET’s inception in the 1960s, when the revolutionary concept of interconnected computers was born. This early network laid the groundwork for the modern Internet, enabling computers to share data and communicate over vast distances. In the subsequent decades, this technology evolved, leading to the creation of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee in the late 1980s.

Today, the Internet serves as a digital frontier that transcends geographical boundaries. It provides access to a staggering wealth of information, entertainment, and services. From social networking and e-commerce to online education and remote work, its applications are diverse and far-reaching. Moreover, the Internet’s impact on communication cannot be understated, as it has transformed how people interact, fostering connections and collaborations across the globe.

However, this technological marvel also presents challenges. The prevalence of misinformation, cybercrimes, and privacy breaches remind us of the Internet’s dual nature. Striking a balance between its advantages and disadvantages is imperative as we navigate this digital landscape.

The Internet, a monumental achievement in the world of technology, has revolutionized the way we live, work, and communicate. The journey began with ARPANET, a project initiated by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1960s to create a network that could withstand disruptions. This laid the foundation for modern networking protocols, paving the way for the Internet we know today. The turning point arrived in the late 1980s with the creation of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee, which transformed the Internet into a user-friendly platform accessible to people worldwide.

The Internet’s impact on society is profound. It has democratized information, enabling individuals to access an unprecedented volume of knowledge. Online platforms offer opportunities for education, from Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to virtual classrooms. The rise of e-commerce has reshaped the retail landscape, allowing consumers to shop with convenience and choice. Moreover, the Internet has fostered connections, facilitating global collaboration, and allowing for the rapid dissemination of ideas.

However, this digital revolution is not without challenges. Cybersecurity threats loom large, with cybercrimes like hacking and identity theft on the rise. The Internet’s role in the spread of misinformation has raised concerns about the credibility of information available online. The addictive nature of social media has also prompted discussions about its impact on mental health and social interactions. The Internet’s influence on society is intricate and multi-faceted, touching upon every aspect of human existence. It has democratized information, transformed commerce, and reshaped how we connect and communicate. While challenges like cyber threats and misinformation persist, harnessing the Internet’s potential for positive change is within our grasp. By fostering digital literacy, promoting ethical behaviour, and leveraging technology for the greater good, we can ensure that the Internet continues to be a force for progress and connectivity.

Curating a competitive essay requires the following approach-

  • Analyze the essay prompt to grasp its essence and requirements. Ensure your essay addresses the key points while maintaining coherence.

  • Begin with a captivating hook that grabs the reader’s attention. Provide context and a clear thesis statement that outlines the essay’s main arguments.
  • Each paragraph should present a single idea supported by evidence and examples. Transition smoothly between paragraphs to maintain a logical flow.
  • Support your arguments with credible sources, statistics, anecdotes, or real-world examples. This adds depth and authenticity to your essay.
  • Write clear and concise sentences. Use transition words to connect ideas and ensure a smooth reading experience.
  • Address potential counterarguments and refute them logically. This showcases your understanding of the topic and strengthens your position.
  • Summarize your main points, restate your thesis, and provide a thought-provoking closing statement. Avoid introducing new ideas here.
  • Thoroughly revise your essay for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Check for clarity, coherence, and overall impact.
  • Regular practice is essential for improving your essay writing skills. Seek feedback from peers or instructors to identify areas for improvement.

Essays foster critical thinking, improve communication skills, and enhance creativity. They provide a platform to express ideas and opinions effectively.

Practice is key. Start by brainstorming ideas, creating outlines, and proofreading your work. Reading diverse essays can also provide insights.

Absolutely! Personal experiences add authenticity and depth to your essays. However, ensure they are relevant to the topic.

A good introduction should grab the reader’s attention, provide context, and present a clear thesis statement.

The internet has changed our lives undisputedly and in multifarious ways. We cannot deny that it has made life simpler and easier in diverse areas. Firstly, the internet has made it easier to communicate with each other, thereby increasing the speed and ease of communication, connecting lives and regions throughout the world, enabling easier dissemination of information, and also enhancing overall productivity in terms of getting the work done.

Can you imagine a scenario where there is no internet? A place where you have to repeatedly place phone calls to associates to get the message across? or a time where you rely on letter to pass your message which takes days to reach the recipient. The internet has made it possible for us to send emails with ease or even engage in video calls or internet calls on different connectivity platforms. It has given us the liberty to express our opinions, engage with entire communities, and also maintain our relationships using different social networking sites and applications.

It has enabled us to get more work done at a fast pace. It has made us more proactive and we can now easily access all the information we desire with just few clicks. It has also contributed towards more avenues for knowledge-gathering, education, mentorship, awareness, marketing, entertainment- you name it and it has achieved the impossible in super-quick time. I would like to conclude by stating that without the internet, it is not possible to imagine the present modern life.

The internet has been possibly the biggest game-changer for civilization in the recent era. The year 2000 has propelled the world and its residents towards further progress, pushing the boundaries of human possibility, knowledge, and decision-making to stratospheric levels.

It is inconceivable to imagine our lives operating at the same speed at which it did before. This pertains to communication systems, relationships, productivity, assignments, and a lot more. The internet has also ushered in the era of  data or knowledge. Everything we wish to know is now accessible and this democratizes information for the masses. Someone rightly said that  data is the new oil and it will be the case in the near future. The internet has made it possible to gather updates, express opinions, maintain relationships, indulge one’s passions/interests and also get more work done swiftly. It is all part of a day’s work today. And the best part is that there are no geographical barriers anymore.

This era is one of communication, information, and speed. The internet is the biggest harbinger of the same. Naturally, it will ultimately take us on the path towards further advancement, innovation, problem-solving, and ultimately a better future. Of course, there are issues with every good thing in life; even the internet may have led to rise in crime, fraud, trolling, and other aspects. However, the positives simply outstrip the negatives, and by a massive margin at that.

How to Write an Essay Introduction | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on February 4, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

A good introduction paragraph is an essential part of any academic essay . It sets up your argument and tells the reader what to expect.

The main goals of an introduction are to:

  • Catch your reader’s attention.
  • Give background on your topic.
  • Present your thesis statement —the central point of your essay.

This introduction example is taken from our interactive essay example on the history of Braille.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Step 1: hook your reader, step 2: give background information, step 3: present your thesis statement, step 4: map your essay’s structure, step 5: check and revise, more examples of essay introductions, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about the essay introduction.

Your first sentence sets the tone for the whole essay, so spend some time on writing an effective hook.

Avoid long, dense sentences—start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

The hook should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of the topic you’re writing about and why it’s interesting. Avoid overly broad claims or plain statements of fact.

Examples: Writing a good hook

Take a look at these examples of weak hooks and learn how to improve them.

  • Braille was an extremely important invention.
  • The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

The first sentence is a dry fact; the second sentence is more interesting, making a bold claim about exactly  why the topic is important.

  • The internet is defined as “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities.”
  • The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education.

Avoid using a dictionary definition as your hook, especially if it’s an obvious term that everyone knows. The improved example here is still broad, but it gives us a much clearer sense of what the essay will be about.

  • Mary Shelley’s  Frankenstein is a famous book from the nineteenth century.
  • Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement.

Instead of just stating a fact that the reader already knows, the improved hook here tells us about the mainstream interpretation of the book, implying that this essay will offer a different interpretation.

Next, give your reader the context they need to understand your topic and argument. Depending on the subject of your essay, this might include:

  • Historical, geographical, or social context
  • An outline of the debate you’re addressing
  • A summary of relevant theories or research about the topic
  • Definitions of key terms

The information here should be broad but clearly focused and relevant to your argument. Don’t give too much detail—you can mention points that you will return to later, but save your evidence and interpretation for the main body of the essay.

How much space you need for background depends on your topic and the scope of your essay. In our Braille example, we take a few sentences to introduce the topic and sketch the social context that the essay will address:

Now it’s time to narrow your focus and show exactly what you want to say about the topic. This is your thesis statement —a sentence or two that sums up your overall argument.

This is the most important part of your introduction. A  good thesis isn’t just a statement of fact, but a claim that requires evidence and explanation.

The goal is to clearly convey your own position in a debate or your central point about a topic.

Particularly in longer essays, it’s helpful to end the introduction by signposting what will be covered in each part. Keep it concise and give your reader a clear sense of the direction your argument will take.

Here's why students love Scribbr's proofreading services

Discover proofreading & editing

As you research and write, your argument might change focus or direction as you learn more.

For this reason, it’s often a good idea to wait until later in the writing process before you write the introduction paragraph—it can even be the very last thing you write.

When you’ve finished writing the essay body and conclusion , you should return to the introduction and check that it matches the content of the essay.

It’s especially important to make sure your thesis statement accurately represents what you do in the essay. If your argument has gone in a different direction than planned, tweak your thesis statement to match what you actually say.

To polish your writing, you can use something like a paraphrasing tool .

You can use the checklist below to make sure your introduction does everything it’s supposed to.

Checklist: Essay introduction

My first sentence is engaging and relevant.

I have introduced the topic with necessary background information.

I have defined any important terms.

My thesis statement clearly presents my main point or argument.

Everything in the introduction is relevant to the main body of the essay.

You have a strong introduction - now make sure the rest of your essay is just as good.

  • Argumentative
  • Literary analysis

This introduction to an argumentative essay sets up the debate about the internet and education, and then clearly states the position the essay will argue for.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

This introduction to a short expository essay leads into the topic (the invention of the printing press) and states the main point the essay will explain (the effect of this invention on European society).

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

This introduction to a literary analysis essay , about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , starts by describing a simplistic popular view of the story, and then states how the author will give a more complex analysis of the text’s literary devices.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale. Arguably the first science fiction novel, its plot can be read as a warning about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, and in popular culture representations of the character as a “mad scientist”, Victor Frankenstein represents the callous, arrogant ambition of modern science. However, far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to gradually transform our impression of Frankenstein, portraying him in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

The “hook” is the first sentence of your essay introduction . It should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of why it’s interesting.

To write a good hook, avoid overly broad statements or long, dense sentences. Try to start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.
